They were once again challenged by Rick & Kathy Schubert, who had an excellent score of 380. They were followed by The Old Folks at DG, Bob Dorin & Chris Reeve, Irish & Mike, Howard Teitelbaum & Sis, and newcomers The Protein Men. Bruce Kukich, the Norm/Kathy/Carol team, Bob Marshall, and Bonnie Teitelbaum also turned in excellent performances. All together, 11 teams had scores above 280! Thanks to all for playing. The Elegants were one of ultimate 1-hit wonder groups, garnering a number one with "Little Star" and never again hitting the Top 100. Others who accomplished the same feat were the Silhouettes, the Singing Nun, and the Hollywood Argyles. Anybody know of any others?] I was born one morning When the sun didn't shine I picked up my shovel And I walked to the mine #06) Ford, "Tennessee" Ernie: "Sixteen Tons" (1955) [1] [Irish & Mike noted that Ford also used the nickname "The Pea Picker"] You say you're gonna go And call it quits Gonna chuck it all And break our love to bits #07) Four Seasons: "Let's Hang On!" (1965) [3] I've got your picture Hangin' on the wall But it can't see Or come to me #08) Gaye, Marvin & Tammi Terrell: "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" (1968) [8] There's this cute little girly She's a-working there Black leotards and her feet are bare #09) Gilmer, Jimmy & the Fireballs, "Sugar Shack" (1963) [1] I remember when I told you I'd try in every way To hold and kiss you and love you and keep you Till my dying day #10) Goldsboro, Bobby: "It's Too Late" (1966) [23] [This one turned out to be much tougher than I expected. Only the Bob Dorin/ Chris Reeve team had an answer for this song, and they knew the artist only.] Every night I cry Every night I sigh Every night I wonder why You treat me cold #11) Holloway, Brenda: "Every Little Bit Hurts" (1964) [13] [This one stumpted everyone! Holloway hit the Top-40 charts again in 1965 with "When I'm Gone" and in 1967 with "You've Made Me So Very Happy".] He'll take your girl And then he'll hide And he'll mistreat her #12) Kuban, Bob & the In-Men: "The Cheater" (1966) [12] [Howard Teitelbaum noted that line two should be "And then he'll lie"] [Another 1-Hit Wonder. The fate of "The Cheater" figured ironically in the real life fate of "Sir" Walter Scott, the lead singer of the In-Men, whose life met an untimely end in 1983 at the hands of his wife and her lover. His body was found stuffed in a cistern three and a half years later.] Anyone who sees her Soon forgets the Mona Lisa #13) Lawrence, Steve: "A Portrait of My Love" (1961) [9] [Howard T. mentioned that the Tokens did a cover version of this song in 1967. Steven Levine also noted that these lyrics are remarkably similar to those of the theme song for the TV show "Gidget", sung by Johnny Tillotson: "Everyone who sees her Thereupon agrees her Face could replace The Mona Lisa"] They all laugh when they see me comin' But you don't laugh You just go home runnin' #14) Lewis, Gary & the Playboys: "Everybody Loves a Clown" (1965) [4] Joe's all alone And he wants to be kissed But Mary's in the corner And she's doin' the twist #15) Maresca, Ernie: "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)" (1962) [6] [Even though this was his only hit, Maresca was a prolific song- writer, penning many songs for Dion/The Belmonts, the Regents, the Del-Satins and others. "Shout! Shout!" bears a very similar sound to "Runaround Sue", which Maresca also wrote.] When I peeked in the mirror of my car I couldn't believe my eyes #16) Playmates: "Beep Beep" (1958) [4] Don't you see no matter what you do You'll never run away from you #17) Revere, Paul & The Raiders: "Kicks" (1966) [4] [Written by the super songwriting (and husband/wife) team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil] Cheeks are rosy She looks a little nosey #18) Roe, Tommy: "Sheila" (1962) [1] When you are near me My heart skips a beat I can hardly stand on my own two feet #19) Rosie & the Originals: "Angel Baby" (1960-61) [5] I know there's lotta fish in the sea I know some woulda stay by me #20) Seeds: "Pushin' Too Hard" (1967) [36] When I looked up to the sky I see your eye, a funny kind of yellow I was lonesome and I sought my head I see your face underneath my pillow #21) Status Quo: "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (1968) [12] [Although this was Status Quo's only U.S. hit, they are considered a super- group in the England, having charted more hits than the Beatles, Rolling Stones, or the Hollies. They are still active performers.] One look back upon all the good times we had Makes me feel oh so bad, oh yeah #22) Sunrays: "Andrea" (1966) [41] [There were no correct responses for this song. The Sunrays were produced by Murry Wilson, father of the Beach Boys' Wilson brothers.] Darling, you run all over town Build me up and then you let me down #23) Tams: "What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)" (1963-64) [9] [Another difficult song with only 2.5 correct answers. Several people mentioned "Build Me Up, Buttercup" (by the Foundations) which has a similar lyric. The Norm/Kathy/Carol team gave as the artist, "Bill Deal & the Rhondels", who did a cover version (they charted #23 in 1969). Unfortunately, it doesn't fit alphabetically.] :-( My one and only prayer Is that some day you'll care #24) Twitty, Conway: "It's Only Make Believe" (1958) [1] [Conway doing his best Elvis impression. Barry Silk said that Twitty (real name: Harold Jenkins) played baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies for a brief time.] I know you deceive me Now here's a surprise I know that you have 'Cause there's magic in my eyes #25) Who, The: "I Can See for Miles" (1967) [9] [The Who's (of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame "fame") only Top-10 hit] ############################################################################### Thanks again to all for playing. GOLQ #16 will be posted shortly. ---Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu
