Once again, the Barry Silk, Joe Haertel, & Mark Lipshutz team captured the oldies title by correctly identifying 23 of 25 songs. The Norm, Kathy & Carol (with a little help from Kathy/Carol's mother) team finished second with 428 points, but also knew the TITLES of 23 of the 25 songs. Excellent scores were also achieved by Dan Murphy, Howard Teitelbaum, The Old Folks at DG, Bob Kukich, and several other teams. Thanks to all for playing and keeping the oldies alive! The Cryan' Shames version was a big hit in the Chicago area, but may have gotten limited or no airplay in some parts of the country, such as the West Coast. The Cryan' Shames' lead singer was recognizable because he had lost part of one of his arms and had a prosthetic device with a hook in place of his hand. Barry Silk and the Schuberts mentioned that the Searchers version of this song was featured in the movie, "Good Morning, Vietnam".] You can make me cry You can break my heart But I'll never say we're through #07) Davis, Skeeter: "I Can't Stay Mad at You" (1963) [7] [Written around the melody of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up is Hard To Do"] You turn to the right You find a little bright light #08) Domino, Fats: "My Blue Heaven" (1956) [21] Your heart keeps a-jumpin like a kangaroo Floatin' like an onion in a bowl of stew #09) Fabian: "Tiger" (1959) [3] [Barry Silk, the only one to get this song correct, provided the following information about Fabian: "Fabian never could sing. He was "discovered" sitting on the steps of his South Philadelphia rowhouse (for his 'good-looks' rather than any singing ability), by a record producer (Bob Marcucci) who owned the Chancellor label (Frankie Avalon also recorded for Chancellor). He got exposure on "Bandstand" and became a 'teen idol'. He is now a sponsor in the Philadelphia area for NutraSystems" claiming he lost 40 pounds. It hasn't helped him sing any better, however :-)"] Wind and storm Gone's the sun 'Round the star My dark has come #10) Fleetwoods: "Tragedy" (1961) [10] [Howard Teitelbaum noted that this song was originally done by Thomas Wayne in 1959] I know that he hurt you bad I know, Darling Don't be sad #11) Flying Machine, The: "Smile a Little Smile for Me" (1969) [5] [A British studio group that had no connection with James Taylor's late 60s American group of the same name] I'm breakin' rocks in the hot sun #12) Fuller, Bobby Four: "I Fought the Law" (1966) [9] [Bobby Fuller died under mysterious circumstances, probably suicide, a few months after the release of this song] Oh, I've been cookin' all morning And you haven't touched a single bite #13) Gentry, Bobbie: "Ode To Billy Joe" (1967) [1] Hello, Lamp Post Whatcha' knowin'? I come to watch your flowers growin' #14) Harpers Bizarre: "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" (1967)[13] [Written by Paul Simon (several people guessed Simon & Garfunkel). Howard T. noted that Simon, commenting in a recent interview on his venture into African and other styles of music, said that his worst nightmare was to be 75 years old and still be performing "Feeling Groovy"!] Oh, won't you come with me As I walk this land Please take my hand #15) Iron Butterfly: "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (1968) [30] [Bring out the lava lamp and black light! Paul Gosse mentioned that the album of the same name was the first to go platinum. Barry Silk provided an explanation for the title of the song: "Doug Ingle, the lead singer of Iron Butterfly, was stoned when he recorded this song. The song was supposed to be "In The Garden of Eden", but slurred his words because of his mental state."] I met her on the mountain There I took her life I met her on the mountain Stabbed her with my knife #16) Kingston Trio: "Tom Dooley" (1958) [1] I don't want you I don't need you I don't love you anymore And I'd walk out the door! #17) McDaniels, Gene: "Tower of Strength" (1961) [5] [One of the (unintentially) funniest songs ever. Also, a great song to lip sych to! Minus one point for leaving off the 's' in McDaniels.] I cooked your food I cleaned your house And this is how you pay me back For all my kind, unselfish, loving deeds #18) Napoleon XIV: "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" (1966) [5] [Easily one of the most warped records in the history of rock & roll! Napoleon was Jerry Samuels, a recording engineer from New York. Several respondents noted that flip side of TCTTMA,HH! was the same song played backward (even the label was printed backward!)] Oh, when we walk It seems like paradise And when we talk It always feels so nice #19) Randy & The Rainbows: "Denise" (1963) [10] Right now I'm speculatin' Wonder what tomorrow's gonna really bring If I don't find work tomorrow It's gonna be heartaches and sorrow #20) Reflections, The: "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet" (1964) [6] Just heed this plea, my love On bended knee, my love #21) Rolling Stones, The: "Lady Jane" (1966) [24] [The first song by "The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band" in the long and illustrious history of the GOLQ! Of course, I made it an obscure one (the flip side of "Mother's Little Helper) :-)] All the girls they criticised her But all the guys just idolized her #22) Royal, Billy Joe: "Cherry Hill Park" (1969) [15] All my life I've loved you so Never dreamed I'd miss you so Now alone in my room each night My heart, it cries: "It's Just Not Right" #23) Scott, Jack: "What in the World's Come Over You" (1960) [5] [Although he had four Top-10 hits, Scott is obviously not well known (there were only 4 correct responses). He's a personal favorite of mine because, like Fabian, he is one of the few rock & roll singers that I can sing nearly as well as.] Sugar, sugar plum Sugar, sugar plum Sugar, sugar plum Sweet as they come #24) Skip & Flip: "Cherry Pie" (1960) [11] [Both Dan Murphy and Howard T. mentioned that this song was originally done by Marvin & Johnny in 1954] It's heaven when you find your man on your menu #25) Washington, Dinah: "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" (1959) [8] [There were only three correct responses for this song. Irish and Mike, who had one of them, pointed out that the line should read: "It's heaven when you find romance on your menu". Guess I carried the food/cooking analogy one song too far!] ############################################################################### Thanks again to all for playing. GOLQ #17 will be posted shortly. ---Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu
