Congratulations to the (Wash.) D.C. Connection (Barry Silk & Joe Haertel) on their victory. They, along with Ron & the family Crandall, & Howard & Bonnie Teitelbaum, achieved excellent scores. The Schuberts, Without Jamie (my personal favorite team!) & team (Ron) Crandall did very well. Good scores also came from Team Dorin, Irish & UNM. In fact, the scores were higher than I've seen in quite awhile. Thanks to all who took time to enter. After we clear up the confusion as to who'll be posting GOLQ32, it'll be coming to a screen near you ASAP!! Jamie jil@donuts0.bellcore.com P.S. On Tuesday's Jeopardy TV Show, I swept the 50s Rock Lyrics category (so why don't they have the category every night...I need the help!!). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. The following is summarized from "The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders:" The "group" was really a variable bunch of studio musicians organized by Gary Usher. When this song became a hit, Ritchie Burns (who was one of the backing vocalists on the recording) was recruited to front a touring "Hondells." The LP photo was needed before the touring band could be assembled, so Burns, who worked days as a bank teller, posed with 3 other tellers from his bank as the group. The band never had another big hit, but they went on to appear on TV & in 3 movies (Ski Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, & Beach Ball) throughout 1965.] [Rick added that the Beach Boys also recorded this, but the Hondells' version charted 1st & at a higher position] I can't help feeling gloomy Thinking 'bout the loving I've missed We pass on the street My heart skips a beat #11) Jan & Dean: "Linda" (63) [28] Tonight when we go out I'm feeling so proud Walking hand in hand Down Lover's Lane #12) Jive Five: "I'm A Happy Man" (65) [36] She smiled that same old smile My heart was running wild My love for her increases As I go all to pieces #13) Lee, Dickey: "I Saw Linda Yesterday" (62/63) [14] [Second song in the quiz with "Linda" in the title] Offside and holding, yeah You ought to be ashamed of yourself, baby Offside and holdin', yeah Holdin' on to someone else #14) Mel And Tim: "Backfield In Motion" (69/70) [10] You can be here by four thirty 'Cause I've made your reservation Don't be slow, oh no no no Oh no no no #15) Monkees: "Last Train To Clarksville" (66) [1] [HB team added that it was written by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart] [Their 1st charted hit] [They helped finance the 1969 Dennis Hopper/Peter Fonda classic "Easy Rider"] [Stephen Stills auditioned for the Monkees & (obviously) didn't make it] Can't speed, we're in a slow-down zone Baby, look at the clock, why can't it be wrong If we coulda left home at a quarter to nine Woulda had fun and plenty of time #16) Nelson, Ricky: "It's Late" (59) [9] [HB team & Rick (not Nelson) pointed out that it was written by Dorsey Burnette & that it was the B-side of "Never Be Anyone Else But You."] [Second song in the quiz with a time of day in the lyrics] He drove his car to the racing ground He was the youngest driver there The crowd roared as they started the race 'Round the track they drove at a deadly pace #17) Peterson, Ray: "Tell Laura I Love Her" (60) [7] Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I felt kinda seasick The crowd called out for more #18) Procol Harum: "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (67) [5] [HB team & Rick mentioned that the melody is based on the Bach cantata "Sleepers Awake." Group's name is Latin for "beyond these things."] [Several people added that the second line should read " I WAS FEELING kinda seasick;" I guess I should stop living in the past :-)] [In soundtrack of "The Big Chill"] You're mine Your kiss belongs to me Yes, it belongs to only me For eternity #19) Robert & Johnny: "We Belong Together" (58) [32] [Rick pointed out that Jimmy Velvet charted with this in '64 & that both the Belmonts & Ritchie Valens had uncharted versions] I love her She loves me But I don't fit in her society #20) Royal, Billy Joe: "Down In The Boondocks" (65) [9] [HB team & Rick stated that this was written & produced by Joe South ("Games People Play."] [His 1st charted hit] [Second song in the quiz with "society" in the lyrics] You lied to me before and I know You'll lie, yes you'll lie I know I'll be right You lied, yes you'll lie again #21) Scott, Linda: "Don't Bet Money Honey" (61) [9] There in the night was a wonderful scene Mom was dancing with Dad to my record machine #22) Starr, Kay: "Rock And Roll Waltz" (55/56) [1] [Third song in the quiz with "Rock And Roll" in the title] If you think that no other woman wants him Just pitch him out in the streets and you will see Some woman will have your man Before you can count one, two, three #23) Tex, Joe: "Hold What You've Got" (64/65) [5] Now once I was downhearted Disappointment was my closest friend But then you came and he soon departed And, you know, he never showed his face again #24) Wilson, Jackie: "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher" (67) [6] [HB team & Rick mentioned Rita Coolidge's 1977 cover hit #2] [Rick added that it hit #1 on the R&B charts] If you don't want me Don't lead me on girl But if you need me Show me that you love me #25) Wood, Brenton: "Gimme Little Sign" (67) [9] Yes maybe (maybe) she loves me (loves me) But who am I to know And maybe (maybe) she loves me (loves me) But who am I to know #TB1) Cadillacs: "Gloria" (54) [Rick pointed out that they were the 1st R&B vocal group to use choreography extensively in their stage routines & that the original version of the song was done in '48 by either the Ink Spots or the Mills Bros.] [Fifth song in the quiz with a woman's name (not counting "Chantilly") in the title] Hold me baby, squeeze me Never let me go I'm not taking chances Because I love her, love her so #TB2) Crows: "Gee" (54) [Rick stated that this hit #14 on the pop charts & #2 on the R&B charts. This disc, and several others of the same genre, laid the groundwork for the countless thousands of R&R sides to follow.] [Released 3/54; Chords' "Sh-Boom" released 6/54] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. An a capella group, Who's Johnny, performed "Gloria"--thus #TB1 on this quiz. The Jive Five, with original lead singer Eugene Pitt, performed "I'm A Happy Man"--thus #12 on this quiz. Prior to performing "My True Story," Eugene mentioned that he penned the subject matter for this song after his girlfriend married his best friend. The Earls (whom I used to think were a black group), with original lead singer Larry Chance, dedicated "I Believe" to a former group member whom I believe died during the Viet Nam war; Larry further mentioned that this song was ranked #4 in the last WCBS-FM listener survey. They've recorded a new song about Elvis entitled "He's Alive." Larry went on to say that "Remember Then" has sold 8 1/2 million copies, but that they've gotten nothing from "those bastards" at Old Town records; they then performed the song & while singing, Larry shook my hand (we had front row center seats, ~ 10 ft. from the performers)--definitely one of the highlights for me!! Another a capella group, The Valentinos, performed their new 45, an Italian version of (The Dubs') "Chapel Of Dreams." The Chiffons performed several of their hits. The Duprees did "Have You Heard"--thus #8 on this quiz. Prior to singing "You Belong To Me," they thanked the audience for making the song #7 on the last WCBS-FM survey. The Five Satins, with original lead singer, Fred Parris, ended the show with "In The Still Of The Nite" after thanking the audience for making the song #1 on the WCBS-FM survey for 18 years!! Fred mentioned that "In The Still Of The Nite" was the B-side; the A-side (which they performed), "The Jones Girl," was supposed to be the hit, but as we know, it didn't work out that way. Obviously, the rankings in the WCBS-FM surveys (included in my quiz results) are of some importance to those in the music business & are not meaningless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Concert mini-report 9/5/92, Parsippany Hilton, Parsippany, NJ 4 groups at ~ 30 min. per group; highlights below. Capris with original lead singer Nick Santo (nee Santamaria) dedicated a Platters' medley to their late lead singer, Tony Williams; sang "Morse Code Of Love" & of course did their biggest hit, "There's A Moon Out Tonight." Orioles (as in Sonny Til & The Orioles) did "It's Too Soon To Know," "I Miss You So," & "Crying In The Chapel." Limelites (as in Shep & The Limelites) who, as originally, had a member of the Videos, started with the Videos' "Trickle, Trickle." Among their own songs were "Ready For Your Love," "Our Anniversary," "Three Steps From The Altar" &, of course, "Daddy's Home." The Harptones with original lead singer Willie Winfield performed "Memories Of You," "Sunday Kind Of Love" (their 1st hit) & "Life Is But A Dream" (their biggest hit). After the show, went into the dressing room & got Willie's autograph. Jamie jil@donuts0.bellcore.com
