Message-Id: From: Jamie Lubin Subject: Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz 40 (GOLQ40) Results & Answer Key To: rick.schubert@SanDiego.NCR.COM Date: Thu, 8 Apr 93 9:22:49 EDT RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #40 (GOLQ40) Congratulations to Barry Silk & Joe Haertel who won this quiz with an excellent score & to Ron & Sally Crandall on their very good total. Good scores were also achieved by Team Dorin, the Schuberts & Team Teitelbaum. Every song was identified by at least one entrant; kudos to Team (Ron) Crandall, Don Fausett & Team Teitelbaum for being the only ones to recognize a specific song. "Wild Thing" was the 1st song since GOLQ30's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" & "Wooly Bully" to achieve a perfect score. Some of you identified a couple of my themes, but not all of them. And now last, but not least: Another milestone...GOLQs have now used > 1000 songs!!! Thanks to all who entered. Howard Teitelbaum has already posted GOLQ41 with a 4/27/93 due date. They asked callers if they could identify the line in (Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry which followed "When we kissed, I felt a sweet sensation." I was lucky enough to get through & correctly answer the question; I won 2 tix to the Bottom Line niteclub in N.Y.C. for the 90-min. show "Darlene Love: Portrait Of A Singer" which was conceived as more of a musical biography than a concert. Attended the show on 2/10 & it was excellent. As has been mentioned in these quizzes before, Darlene Love (nee Wright) & the Blossoms recorded "He's A Rebel" under the name of the Crystals & "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah" as the lead singer under the name of Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans, Darlene's single "Wait Til' My Bobby Gets Home" was also used in GOLQ32, while her "All Alone For Christmas" was featured in Home Alone 2...but that's only part of it. The show began with 3 other singers doing bits & pieces of ~15 well-known 50s/60s songs; upon finishing they mentioned that Darlene had sung on all of them. Unfortunately, I hadn't been listing them, but I do remember: "Rock-in Robin," "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" & "Monster Mash." And among MANY other tidbits: she was featured on "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)," was on "Don't Make Me Over," had a love affair with Bill Medley of the Righteous Bros., had a small part in the Elvis movie "Change Of Habit," sang on recordings of Doris Day & Gene Autry & she & the Blossoms were regulars on the "Shindig" TV program; to top off the evening, I was able to get her autograph] She got plenty of rhythm, got plenty of jive And when we dance, I really come alive My love for her is so tender and sweet My heart starts poundin' every time we meet #15) Ricky Nelson: "Be-Bop Baby" (57/58) [3] [Howard/Rick pointed out that it was a #5 R&B hit] [on the Pop charts for 20 weeks] I thought that I was over you But it's true, so true I love you even more than I did before But darling what can I do #16) Roy Orbison: "Crying" (61) [2] [Howard/Rick reported these covers: Jay & The Americans, #25 in '66, Don McLean, #5 in '81 & recently, K.D. He did a mock-dramatic reading of the lyrics & of course the middle-aged audience is howling with laughter at the drivel the teens are listening to. Throughout the piece, he mispronounces the title as "Be-Bop-A-Luba"] [Rick added that he co-wrote this in the hospital (with a fellow patient) while recovering from a motorcycle accident; title derived from the comic strip character, Little Lulu. It hit #8 on the R&Bs. His real name Vincent Eugene Craddock] [Jonathan Gowland (The Genasys Team) believes than the flip side, "Woman Love" was found to be obscene in at least one state of the U.S.; anyone having more details, please post to rec.games.trivia] [their 1st charted hit; on the Pop charts for 20 weeks] [3rd song in the quiz with "be-bop" in the title/lyrics] To feel your lips to mine To hold you tight You'll be the only girl my whole life through O-oh, nobody else, nobody else will do #24) Chuck Willis: "What Am I Living For" (58) [9] [Rick stated: it was done with the Reggie Obrecht Orchestra & Chorus; it was a #1 R&B hit which was the "A" side of "Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes" (GOLQ32)] [Don added that Willis died of peritonitis about the time that this song was released] I'd give the moon if it were mine to give I'd give the stars and the sun for I live To thrill you with delight I'd give you diamonds bright #25) Yardbirds: "For Your Love" (65) [6] [Ron said that this is alleged to have been the song that led Eric Clapton to leave the Yardbirds, because he judged it to be too commercial] [their 1st charted hit] [3rd song in the quiz with "diamond" in the lyrics/artists & 6th song in the quiz with (a) bird in the titles/artists] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- tie breakers: My love a-bigger than a Cadillac (ooh-ba-ba-ba-ba) I try to show it and you drive-a me back (ooh-ba-ba-ba-ba) Your love for me, it got to be real (ooh-ba-ba-ba-ba) I thought you'd-a know just how I feel (ooh-ba-ba-ba-ba) #TB1) Buddy Holly & The Crickets: "Not Fade Away" (57) [Howard reported these covers: The Rolling Stones, #48 in '64 (their first USA charted song added Barry), Tanya Tucker, #70 in '79 & Eric Hine, #73 in '81] [Ron pointed out that it was originally released as the flip side of "Oh, Boy!" One source states that backing vocals (uncredited) were done by the Picks. It was rereleased on the Coral label in '64 as the flip side of "Maybe Baby" & credited to Buddy Holly only] [Any answer with Buddy Holly &/or the Crickets was acceptable] [3rd song in the quiz with "Cadillac" in the lyrics/artists] I remember her sweet kiss In the cool summer breeze As she lays warm and tender in my arms #TB2) Jesters: "The Wind" (59) [done originally in '54 by (Nolan Strong &) The Diablos] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized.
