Marc and Jamie each said that the last word (on line 4) should be "here" instead of "near."] I've waited (and waited and waited and waited) So long it seems (and waited and waited and waited) You vanished (and waited and waited and waited) out of my dreams Maybe (maybe maybe maybe) a new love you've found #08) Fleetwoods: "Runaround" (1960) [#23] {-} [Jamie said that this was originally done by The Three Chuckles in 1954.] What you've given me I could never return 'Cause there's so much, Girl, I've yet to learn, huh And I want to show, I want to show my appreciation 'Cause when I found you, I found a new inspiration #09) Gaye, Marvin, and Tammi Terrell: "Your Precious Love" (1967) [#5] {2} [Jamie said that it was written by Ashford & Simpson and co-produced by Harvey Fuqua] And don't tell me what to do Don't tell me what to say And, please, when I go out with you Don't put me on display #10) Gore, Lesley: "You Don't Own Me" (1963/64) [#2] {-} You don't understand it but it sure feels nice You thought you might try it but-a once or twice You started with that dance they call the Stroll But you felt much better doing Rock and Roll #11) Hendricks, Bobby: "Itchy Twitchy Feeling" (1958) [#25] {5} [Backing vocals by The Coasters; with the Jimmy Oliver Orchestra. The Dutch Officials said that this song was covered by ``Renee'' in the late seventies in the Netherlands, and she sang "Secrets, baby, I keep 'em to myself". And even if time ain't really on my side It's one of those days for takin' a walk outside I'm blowin' the day to take a walk in the sun And fall on my face on somebody's new-mowed lawn #14) Lovin' Spoonful: "Daydream" (1966) [#2] {-} [Jamie said that it was written by John Sebastian.] The more I fight it The deeper in love I get Each time you hold me I feel nothin' but happiness #15) Martha and the Vandellas: "Quicksand" (1963/64) [#8] {8} [Jamie said that it was written by Holland, Dozier & Holland.] I can only give you country walks in spring time And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall And a love whose burning light Will warm the winter night #16) Nelson, Rick: "That's All" (1963) [#48] {-} [This is the only version of this song that charted (including pre-1955), but it was also recorded by Nat "King" Cole, Johnny Mathis, the Righteous Brothers, and probably a number of other artists.] Savin' nickels, savin' dimes Workin' 'til the sun don't shine Lookin' forward to happier times #17) Orbison, Roy: "Blue Bayou" (1963) [#29] {26} [Jamie noted that it was written by Roy (with Joe Melson). Barry also said that aspiring songwriter Pitney gave this debut recording to music publisher Aaron Schroeder as a demo and that Schroeder was so taken with it that he formed the Musicor label to release it. I'm A Comin'" (1966) [#21] {1} [Barry and Jamie stated that it was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Jamie added that because of its suggestive title, many radio stations refused to air it at all. When Sam & Dave came to Stax, they were assigned the writing/production team of Dave Porter & Isaac Hayes. The latter duo were in the studio writing some songs. Porter left for a minute, & when he didn't come back, an impatient Hayes went looking for him. His room-to-room search finally ended up at the men's room door. Porter was taking his time in there & Hayes yelled at him to hurry up. Porter's irritated reply: "Hey man, hold on. I'm comin'." And a song was born. Team Genasys said that the Australian pressing of the single (on Atlantic) has "Hold On! I'm Comin'," so I gave full credit to either answer.] Don't do to your mom What I did to mine She grew so lonely in the end Angels picked her for their friend #22) Shangri-Las: "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" (1965/66) [#6] {-} When you squeeze me real tight You make wrong things right And I can't stop loving you And I won't stop calling you #23) Thomas, Carla: "B-A-B-Y" (1966) [#14] {3} [Jamie noted that she does a better job of spelling "baby" than did the Echoes in "Baby Blue" (bbaby ;-).] Always be Faithful to me And near each night To hold me tight #24) Vinton, Bobby: "I Love You The Way You Are" (1962) [#38] {-} [Jamie corrected the last line to be "To hold so tight." She wrote it for Jackie Wilson. This song first hit the R&B charts on 12/19/60 but didn't hit the Pop charts until 1/30/61. Jamie added that she recorded while she was hoarse. Ron added that she was only 17 when it was released.] She screamed and said-a "What's wrong with you? From this day on our romance is through" I said "Tell me, Baby, face-to-face" How could another man take my place?" #TB1) McPhatter, Clyde, & The Drifters: "Money Honey" (1953/54) [-] {1} [This song was #1 on the R&B charts for 11 weeks. Barry said that this was The Drifters' first charted record. Don stated that it was written by Jesse Stone, has Sam 'The Man' Taylor on sax, and was covered by Elvis Presley (#76 in 1956).] Oh my darling Let me whisper sweet words of pismotality And discuss the pompitous of love And put 'em together And what do you have -- matrimony Oh my darling, please hear my plea #TB2) Medallions: "The Letter" (1954) [-] {-} [These lyrics are spoken by lead singer Vernon Green. Joe said that this record was issued on label Dootone 347. The Penguin's "Earth Angel" was issued on label Dootone 348. Whereas "The Letter" is virtually unknown to anyone but serious doo-wop fans, "Earth Angel" by contrast is readily known by most R&R music fans. (The flipside of "The Letter" -- "Buick '59" -- suffers a similar fate.) A number of people recognized "the pompitous of love" from the 1973 song "The Joker" by The Steve Miller Band, but most were not able to identify "The Letter." Howard provided these lyrics from "The Joker": Some people call me the space cowboy Some call me the gangster of love Some people call me Maurice 'Cause I speak of the pompitous of love One of the most frequently-asked questions in rec.music.misc is "what is that word that Steve Miller sings in 'The Joker.'" The answers given are usually some form of "pompitous," and the claim is usually that Steve Miller coined the term (humorist Dave Barry has also made this claim), and some claim that Steve Miller has made this claim, too. Several years ago I noticed these lyrics in "The Letter" and posted saying that it sounded to me like the same word and that Steve Miller must have borrowed the word, either consciously or subconsciously, from the Medallions (I figured that if I were right, I must not have been the first person to make this observation). Recently Andrew Rogers supported my suspicions with the following: It probably appeared in his "Consumer Guide" column in Newsday or (possibly) Creem, shortly after "The Joker" came out in late '73. Here's the complete text, as reprinted in [Robert] _Christgau's Record Guide (Rock Albums of the '70s)_: Steve Miller Band: The Joker (Capitol '73). As a spacey rock prophet he's terrible (who isn't?). As a blues singer he's incompetent (I wouldn't come on in his kitchen for a glass of water). But as a purveyor of spacey pop-rock blues, he has his virtues. Question: what the hell is "the pompitous of love"? The Medallions wouldn't tell me.
