They prevailed with a balanced attack through the mastery of both One-Hit Wonder and Teen Idol songs. They pulled away in the fourth quarter from an excellent Barry/Scooter/Joe squad who finished with an impressive 430++ score. Other title contenders were Jyrki Ilva & Pekka Halonen, the Schuberts, The EJs & Co., and Sanford Stein, who all turned in impressive performances. Sanford Stein also gets special recognition for being the only entrant to get song #20. As always, thanks to all for playing! Rick Schubert said he posted GOLQ71 yesterday (Wednesday), but it hasn't yet appeared at my site. Uschanov said that it was from the film of the same name, starring Boone. TPU added that it was the flipside of "Love Letters In The Sand" (GOLQ22)] So many loves have gone wrong For so many hearts are in pain Just like us, they were too young And they played a losing game #04) Dale & Grace: "Stop And Think It Over" (64) [8] Somebody to call me turtle dove #05) Bobby Darin: "Somebody To Love" (60) [45] [Jamie said it was written by Darin] I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde #06) Desmond Dekker & The Aces: "Israelites" (69) [9] [Jamie, Pete Olden, and the EJ's said it was co-written by Desmond Dacris (or Dacres or Dekker, take your pick).] [Pete and the EJ's added that Desmond was the first commercially successful reggae artist. The Dutch Officials said that it hit #1 in the Netherlands. Pete continued: He achieved greater success in the UK than in the US, as evidenced by this song. `Israelites' hit #9 in the US in 1969, but in the UK it hit #1 in 1969, hit the Top 10 again in 1975, and then was revived for a TV commercial in the 1990s. The EJs added: The group's only Top 100 hit. Written by Desmond Dacres [Dekker] and Leslie Kong. Produced by Kong. The first American reggae hit. Rastafarians believe that blacks transported to Jamaica were Ethiopians, and that Ethiopians were one of the twelve lost tribes of Israel. So Dekker is singing about Jamaicans as Israelites] A man in Kentucky Sure is lucky #07) Everly Brothers: "Bowling Green" (67) [40] I feel just like a volcano that's ready to go I want your love and kisses 'cause I love you so And with every kiss that ya' give to me I'll fill your lovin' heart with ecstasy #08) Fabian: "Come On And Get Me" (59) [29] I want, want you to know I love, I love you so Please hold, hold me so tight All through, all through the night #09) Fleetwoods: "Come Softly To Me" (59) [1] {5} [Barry Silk, the EJs, and Jamie said that it was written by the Fleetwoods-- Gary Troxel, Gretchen Christopher & Barbara Ellis] [Jamie added: According to "Behind The Hits," it may be the only rock 'n' roll million-seller on which the vocals were done a capella before any instruments were added; the original title was Come Softly, but record promoter Bob Reisdorff changed it to Come Softly To Me because he feared the 1st title was too suggestive for AM airplay] [The EJ's said it was the first and biggest hit for The Fleetwoods, a million seller. Also recorded by Ronnie Height (in 1959) and The New Seekers featuring Marty Kristian (in 1973). Produced by record promoter Bob Reisdorff who released it as the first record on his own label, Dolphin (changed to Dolton after a conflict with a publishing company)] [Barry added that they were students at Olympia High in Olympia, Washington, and that Gretchen & Barbara, who knew each other since childhood, sang together when they were cheerleaders in junior high school] [And Rick Schubert commented: This was originally released as the first single on Dolphin Records, Dolphin 1, but there was another Dolphin Records, so the record company changed its name to Dolton Records, and this song was rereleased on Dolton 1. In fact, it was the only record ever released on that Dolphin Records label. The Dolton label retained pictures of three dolphins on their labels. The song was originally titled "Come Softly" and was only changed at the last minute to avoid any unintended double entendre.] Baby, I was cruel-el-l (I was cruel) Ba-a-by, I'm a fool (I'm such a fool) #10) 4 Seasons: "Big Girls Don't Cry" (62) [1] [Jamie said it written by Bob Gaudio & Bob Crewe; according to producer Crewe, the title came from a line in a John Payne B-movie] [Barry added that the vocals were arranged Nick Massi] [The EJ's said it was the 4 Seasons' biggest hit, a million seller] And when I speak of you I see envy in other men's eyes And I'm well aware Of what's on their minds They pretend to be my friend #11) Four Tops: "Bernadette": (67) [4] {3} [Jamie, Barry, and the EJ's said it written by Edward Holland, Jr., Lamont Dozier, & Brian Holland. Jamie and the EJ's added that it was produced by Brian Holland & Dozier] [Jamie said it hit #8 in the UK] [The similarity in title was my excuse for including the Pat Boone song] :-) I know that somewhere Somewhere, along the way I'll find my love My own true love Someday #12) Connie Francis: "Follow The Boys" (63) [17] [From the film of the same title] Oh, she's wonderful, she's marvelous She's fabulous, she's beautiful And anyone can understand why #13) Herman's Hermits: "Leaning On The Lamp Post" (66) [9] [Tony Weatherly said it was a big British music hall hit for George Formby back in the 40's] [Rick added that it was from the film "Hold On!" starring Herman's Hermits] [Barry mentioned that there are two versions of this song: the single version and an inferior LP version. He said that, unfortunately, the LP version was used on the recent ABKCO compilation CD] Let's forget about the whinin' and cryin' and the shootin' and the dyin' And the fella' with the switch-blade knife #14) Bob Luman: "Let's Think About Living" (60) [7] {14} [Jamie said it was written by Boudleaux Bryant who wrote many of the Everly Brothers' hits] [The EJ's said it was a novelty record that poked fun at the "death-song" fad of 1960, and that it was Luman's only Top 100 hit, although he also had country and western hits] Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me I can't believe It's just a burning memory #15) Marcels: "Heartaches" (61) [7] {19} [Jamie said it popularized in 1931 by Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians] [Rick said the Lombardo version reached #12 on the charts, and that a version by Ted Weems & His Orchestra hit #1 in 1947] [The EJs mentioned those two versions, also, as well as the following: an instrumental version by Harry James & His Orchestra (1947); Jimmy Dorsey & His Orchestra (1947); Eddy Howard & His Orchestra (1947); Somethin' Smith & The Redheads (1956); and Patsy Cline (1962)] They tell us we're different We haven't the right To decide for ourselves, dear What's black and what's white #16) Ricky Nelson: "A Teenager's Romance" (57) [2] [Rick said that it was the other Rick(y)'s first charted 45; the B side of "I'm Walking", and that his real name was Eric Hilliard Nelson] [Listed in The Book Of Rock Lists as one the "10 Most Disappointing Debut Singles", a sentiment with which I wouldn't necessarily disagree. That may help explain the infrequency of its play on oldies stations] I can see You're slipping away from me And you're so afraid I'll plead with you to stay #17) Gene Pitney: "I'm Gonna Be Strong" (64-65) [9] [Barry and Jamie noted that it was written by Cynthia Weil & Barry Mann] [Tom O'Connor mentioned a country remake by Juice Newton in the early 80s] Said you'd be (Ooh-wa) Good to me (Ooh-wa-wa) Said our love (Ooh-wa) Would never die (Ooh-wa-wa) Said you'd be (Ooh-wa) Good to me (Ooh-wa-wa) But baby, you didn't even try #18) Charlie Rich: "Lonely Weekends" (60) [22] [Jamie said that it was written by Charlie, and was on the charts for 21 weeks] [Jamie also said that on the version he has heard, from both an LP and on the the radio, that my "Ooh-wa-(wa)'s" were replaced with a simple repeat of the foreground lyrics. The lyrics I used were from a version I taped from the radio, and I confirmed that they match. If anyone has the original single, I would appreciate it if they would check it, and post which lyrics are used to alt.rock-n-roll.oldies] [The EJ's said it was Rich's 1st Top 100 hit, and that the back-up vocals were provided by The Gene Lowery Chorus] [Released on the Phillips International label, a Sun affiliate. It was the last single recorded in the original (Union Ave, Memphis) Sun studio] [Charlie was a both a look-alike and sound-alike for Elvis, at this stage of his career] Oh, I swear I'm gonna get you If it takes me all my life I'll hope and pray and dream and scheme I'm gonna be your wife #19) Ronettes: "Do I Love You?" (64) [34] {34} [Barry and Jamie said it was co-written and produced by Phil Spector] I get up in the morning Kick the covers from my bed The sunlight in my eyes Playing tricks with my head I work like a dog On my job every day Tryin' to make some money So's we can go and play #20) Strangeloves: "Night Time" (66) [30] [The Strangeloves' most successful single after "I Want Candy" (GOLQ08)] [A great garage band sound, especially considering that the Strangeloves consisted of studio musicians and producers, Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer] [The focal point of my weak attempt at a mini-theme of "night" and "time" songs] You've given me a true love And every day I thank you, love For giving back so new So inviting, so exciting #21) Supremes: "I Hear A Symphony" (65) [1] {2} [Howard Teitelbaum noted that the third line should be "For a feeling that's so new"] [Jamie & the EJ's said it was written by Holland, Dozier & Holland] [Rick added that it was also recorded by the Isley Brothers] Quit spyin' and sighin' and lyin' and tryin' to be so mean 'Cause You ain't scarin' nobody, baby You're just makin' a scene #22) Sue Thompson: "Paper Tiger" (65) [23] [Jamie and Barry said it was written by John D. Loudermilk] Whoa-oo-o-o, I'm gonna love you With all my heart Just hoping, Dear That we'll never part You're the girl I'm thinking of #23) Valiants: "This Is The Nite" (57-58) [69] [Joe Haertel said that the members of the Valiants later worked with producer Phil Spector. Spector produced two singles for lead singer Billy Storm on the Atlantic label. And the other members of the group became the Alley Cats ("Puddin' N' Tain" - from GOLQ06)] Wonder why when we're alone The hours always pass so fast A kiss or two and then you're gone Gee, the time just doesn't last #24) Jerry Wallace: "How The Time Flies" (58) [11] {11} [His 1st hit, notes Jamie] Now Man's reign is through But through eternal night The twinkling of starlight So very far away Maybe it's only yesterday #25) Zager and Evans: "In The Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" (69) [1] [Jamie observed that Z&E was one of only 8 artists, between 1955 & 1969, whose only charted song hit #1. He classifies those 8 artists as the "ultimate 1-hit wonders". He noted the song was written by (Rick) Evans] [The EJs said that they were from Lincoln, Nebraska (where that "other" :-) football team plays), and that the song was a million seller. Ellis Bromberg added that several of his team members considered the song to be one of the worst of the rock era, another sentiment I probably wouldn't disagree with!] [The Dutch Officials reported that it was also a #1 hit in the Netherlands] [Zager and Evans attempted a followup with the song "The Turnkey Man", which was a graphic account of a man slashing his wrist in prison and bleeding to death. It's not hard to figure out why they were one-hit wonders!] Tie Breakers: Love is like a piece of gold Hard to get, hard to hold I want to hold your hand Until I make you understand #T1) Lewis Lymon & The Teenchords: "Honey Honey (You Don't Know)" (56-57) [-] {-} [Two respondents offered Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers for this song, apparently noticing the family resemblance :-)] Maybe I'm crazy To suppose I'd ever be the One you chose Out of the thousand invitations You receive #T2) Orioles: "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" (49-50) [-] {9} [Two entrants knew the song but gave artists that I wasn't expecting. I can't dispute that those artists may have recorded the song, but, as far as I could tell, neither were released as singles. Fortunately, my decision to give them only partial credit didn't affect the standings] [Jamie noted that the song was written in 1947 by Frank Loesser] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the songs/artists from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the avg. no. of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place).
