Their highest charting record on the R&B chart! I kept you crying, sad and blue I was a playboy, I wouldn't be true But when you left me and said "bye bye" #02) William Bell: "You Don't Miss Your Water" (1962) [95] Jamie noted that it was written by William. Despite it's low chart position, this R&B ballad was a very big seller over a longer period of time, and according to some sources, it eventually sold more than a million copies. No longer can I live With this hurt and this sin I just couldn't tell you That guy was just a friend #03) Pat Boone: "Moody River" (1961) [1] Delhi Trivia Club mentioned that his daughter was #1 16 years after this 1961 song. In Finland "Moody River" was recorded by the late great Olavi Virta. I still see her standing by the water Standing there, looking out to sea And is she waiting there for me On the beach where we used to run #04) Glen Campbell: "Galveston" (1969) [4] Several teams pointed out that the song was written by Jimmy Webb. Barry Silk added that Jimmy Webb also wrote "Worst That Could Happen," "Up-Up And Away" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." Both Rick Schubert and the EJ's & Co. said that it was a #1 song on both the Adult Contemporary Charts (for 6 weeks) and Country Charts (for 3 weeks). The EJ's & Co. added that it was a million seller, and an instrumental version by pianist Roger Williams also made it into the Hot 100 in 1969. Barry Silk and Pete Olden both mentioned that Glen temporarily replaced Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys a year after they recorded the first song in this quiz. I can't love another When my heart's somewhere far away #05) Cascades: "Rhythm of the Rain" (1963) [3] {7} The EJ's & Co. said that it was the first and biggest hit for this San Diego pop group. It was #1 on the adult contemporary chart for two weeks. Gary Lewis And The Playboys also recorded the song---the last of theirs to reach the Hot 100---in 1969. Written by lead singer John Gummoe, Jamie added. Rick mentioned that although they were from San Diego, this is the only song of theirs he has ever heard on San Diego radio stations in the 14+ years he has lived there. The Dutch Officials said that the song was covered in Dutch in 1963 by a famous Dutch singer: Rob de Nijs. That song ends in "pitter, patter, pitter, patter, whoa-a-whoa" (which isn't Dutch), too. A fish was meant to swim in the ocean A boat was made to sail on the sea #06) Sam Cooke: "You Were Made For Me" (1958) [39] {7} Written by Sam, Jamie said. The song was later reissued as the flip side of Cooke's only single ("Just For You") on his own SAR label. Well, we were about three miles from home When all of a sudden it started to rain And I do mean rain I couldn't hardly see nothing #07) Jimmy Cross: "I Want My Baby Back" (1965) [92] The Genasys Team commented: "The ultimate in bad taste songs. He and his baby run into The Leader Of The Pack. His baby is killed, but after three months, he still misses her. The song ends with the sound of digging, then "Pay dirt!", followed by the sound of a coffin lid creaking open, and the chorus "I got my baby back"." Mike Weaver (Oldtunes) said: "A personal observation - this is a TERRIBLE satire on the "death genre" tune. (Which probably explains why I like it so much!)" Well, I stepped out the tub Put my feet on the floor I wrapped the towel around me And I opened the door #08) Bobby Darin: "Splish Splash" (1958) [3] {1} The EJ's & co. mentioned that it was Darin's first hit, a million- seller and #1 on the R&B chart for two weeks. Jamie added that it was written by Bobby & NY DJ Murray The K's mother, Jean Murray (who basically contributed the title). Darin wrote the lyrics in a few (about 10, according to Jeopardy) minutes. Tony Weatherley mentioned that Britain's #1 rocker :), Charlie Drake, had the hit in the UK. Stay close to me Don't let me be alone It's tearing apart My blue, blue heart #09) Neil Diamond: "Red Red Wine" (1968) [62] The Europeans are probably more familiar with Jimmy James & the Vagabonds' version, which hit #36 in the UK in 1968. Tony Weatherley said that it was also a hit for UB40 in the UK, (their version also charted in the US, #34 in 1984). Smiling faces I can see But not for me #10) Marianne Faithfull: "As Tears Go By" (1964/65) [22] The EJ's & Co. noted that it was the first and biggest hit for this British singer (the song hit #9 in the UK). Several people mentioned that the song was later a hit for the Rolling Stones. Jamie added that Mick Jagger & Keith Richard were among the writers. Pete Olden commented: "Marianne was an ex-convent girl who became a singer in the 1960s after being discovered by the manager of the Rolling Stones Andrew Oldham. This song -- her first hit -- was written by Mick Jagger of the Stones. She was his girlfriend for a while, and after she left him his response was the song "Wild Horses". Her career was later helped in the 1970s by another British musician Steve Winwood formerly of Traffic. She also appeared in movies and stage shows." Marianne's autobiography was recently translated into Finnish. You're crying now Just like I used to cry before Turn off the tears, girl I don't care anymore #11) 4 Seasons Featuring the "sound" of Frankie Valli: "Tell It To The Rain" (1966/67) [10] How did I lose you Where did I fail Why did you leave me Always to sail #12) Don Gibson: "Sea of Heartbreak" (1961) [21] The EJ's & Co. said that it was produced by Chet Atkins. All that summer we enjoyed it Wind and rain and shine #13) Hollies: "Bus Stop" (1966) [5] The EJ's & Co mentioned that it was the Hollies first top 10 hit, and it was produced by Ron Richards. David Ewing added that it was written by Graham Gouldman, later of 10 CC. Gouldman also wrote the Yardbirds' hits "For Your Love" and "Heart Full of Soul". According to the Dutch Officials, the song spent 11 weeks in the Dutch Top 40, peaking at #3. Into each dark And starry night Oh what a mystery That seals so tight #14) Johnnie & Joe: "Over the Mountain; Across the Sea" (1958) [8] {3} Rick commented: "The only song I know of with a semicolon in the title. Bobby Vinton also recorded it (#21 in 1963), but his title was "Over The Mountain (Across The Sea)." There's a jukebox playin' Just half a block down Sayin' I'm goin' to the river Gonna jump right in and drown But I ain't gonna do that, girl, no no, I'll just keep on hangin' around #15) Ben E. King: "It's All Over" (1964) [72] {n/c} Produced and co-written by Bert 'Bert Russell' Berns. My friends look forward to their picnics on the beach Yes, everybody loves the summertime Oh, but you know darling, while your arms are out of reach The summer isn't any friend of mine #16) Carole King: "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (1962) [22] Jamie said that it was written by producer Gerry Goffin & Carole. Barry mentioned that Carole originally wrote the song for Bobby Vee, and the EJ's & Co. claimed that this record is actually the demo she made for his consideration. The EJ's & Co. added that it became Carole's first Hot 100 recording, and remained her biggest hit until she became a (post-oldies) superstar with the release of cut from her album "Tapestry" in 1971. Mick Weaver (Oldtunes) commented: "For some reason, this seems to be the only 'early' Carole King song oldies stations will play. There is at least one other: "He's a Bad Boy"." The record was a #3 hit in the UK. Our love and our devotion Were deep as any ocean Then one day like the tide You began to change And you became a perfect stranger #17) Brenda Lee: "Losing You" (1963) [6] {13} Barry Silk commented: "Written by Jean Renard and Carl Sigman. Piano played by Floyd Cramer. The Anita Kerr singers performed the background vocals." Feel like a ball game on a rainy day Yes, I got my rain check Shake my head and walk away #18) Elvis Presley: "I Feel So Bad" (1961) [5] {15} Little Milton's "Feel So Bad" (#91 in 1967) is also a valid answer. Several people mentioned that the song was written and originally recorded by Chuck Willis, whose version hit #8 on the R&B chart in 1954. Hit #2 in the UK. Well, when she loves me She loves me so hard She almost make-a me mad When she kiss me When she don't miss me I know I've been had #19) Marvin Rainwater: "Whole Lotta Woman" (1958) [60] The record was a number one hit in the UK. Marvin Rainwater was an American Indian rockabilly singer, whose biggest US hit was "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" (#18 in 1957). The night was black Rain falling down Looked for my baby She's nowhere around #20) Jody Reynolds: "Endless Sleep" (1958) [5] {5} EJ's & Co. commented: "Written by Jody Reynolds and Delores Nance. The first and biggest hit for this rockabilly singer/guitarist. Al Casey is featured on guitar. Hank Williams Jr. also recorded it in 1964---it was Williams' last recording to reach the Hot 100." Barry Silk said that Jody Reynolds was born in Denver, Colorado in 1935 and spent part of his childhood in Oklahoma before his folks moved to California in the 1940s. Marty Wilde's cover version peaked at #4 in the UK. When I woke up The sun was shining in my eyes My silver spurs were gone My head felt twice in size She took my silver spurs A dollar and a dime #21) Nancy Sinatra with Lee Hazlewood: "Summer Wine" (1967) [49] The EJ's & Co. mentioned that it was produced and written by Lee Hazlewood. They also pointed out that it was the flip side of "Sugar Town." How many tears do you cry If love should break your heart in two #22) Dusty Springfield: "Losing You" (1965) [91] Hit #9 in the UK in 1964. Co-written by Dusty's brother, Tom Springfield. Into each life a little rain must fall Every day can't be Sunday Every smile isn't a smile of happiness And every tear that's shed is not a tear of joy I'd like to take a little time to dedicate this song To everyone who's in the presence of my voice Especially for those who have loved ones far far away Maybe he's across the sea Or maybe she's just in another town I can imagine when you're all alone in the wee wee hour of the night You just might decide to write Knowing all the time that you just can't find the right words to say #23) Oscar Toney Jr.: "For Your Precious Love" (1967) [23] {4} The record starts with these spoken lyrics. The first and biggest of Oscar Toney's four pop hits. Produced by Don "Papa Don" Schroeder, who also produced "I'm Your Puppet" and "Don't Let Love Come Between Us" (both by James and Bobby Purify). Many people consider this the best version of the classic song originally recorded by Jerry Butler & the Impressions in 1958. Other memorable versions have been recorded by Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters (1963), Jerry Butler (1966) and Linda Jones (1972). Many teams guessed that the song was by Joe Tex! I was so afraid I almost turned away But you know I need somebody to cling to #24) Turtles: "You Don't Have to Walk In the Rain" (1969) [51] Barry noted that it was written by the Turtles. I went away to college You said you'd wait for me Then I got your letter Asking me to set you free Tomorrow you'll be married There's nothing I can do #25) Bobby Vinton: "Rain, Rain Go Away" (1962) [12] Tie-breakers: If you change, change your mind (change your mind) Come back to me (baby come back to me) Yeah (come back to me) If you change your mind (change your mind) Please come back to me (back to me) I'll be waiting for you there #T1) Dominoes: "Deep Sea Blues" (1952) Lead singer Clyde McPhatter promises that he will be waiting for his girlfriend "in the deep blue sea". The flip side of their second R&B chart topper, "Have Mercy Baby". I've got the blues so bad (drip drop drip drop) I can hardly catch my breath (drip drop drip drop) The harder it rains, the worse it gets This is the time I love to be holding you tight I guess I'll just go crazy tonight #T2)Irma Thomas: "It's Raining" (1962) Written by Allen Toussaint. "Allen wrote 'It's Raining' sitting in his bathroom," Irma recalls today, "but he didn't write the second verse until he got into the studio. We're in the middle of recording it, and he sets the second verse on the music stand and tells me, mouthing, 'sing this next.' He was just that confident that I would know how to sing it. I'm just glad that _he_ had the confidence, because I was scared to death!" (Quoted from Dawn Eden's liner notes to "Time Is On My Side - The Best of Irma Thomas" [EMI CDP 97988]). The song is a popular oldie in Irma's home town, New Orleans. She still does it on her live shows, as Jyrki was happy to witness when she visited Finland in 1994. _______________________________________________________________________________ THEMES: LIQUID (all songs) The quiz contained a major theme: all songs had something liquid (rain, river, sea, ocean, tear, water, wine, splish splash ;-) either in the lyrics, in the title or in the artist's name. The theme (or parts of it) was identified by the following teams: TP, JR, JL, BS, WV, RK, TA, DT, DO, MW, EJ, PO, GT, DT, SS, DE, CM, LB LOSING YOU (#17, #22) Identified by no one! DEATH TUNES (#03, #07, #15, #20, #T1) Identified by no one! There was also an unofficial theme: several of the records did better in the UK than they did in the US. We didn't expect anybody to get this, though. _______________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to the least recognized. The third number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by the number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Rank Song Avg.
