Jamie Lubin said that the song was written by Lennon and McCartney. The EJs & Co. commented: "A million-selling single from the album "Hey Jude" [released well after the single was a hit]. The song was also the last Hot 100 song for Fats Domino whose version topped out at #100 for two weeks in Fall 1968." Rick Schubert also mentioned Domino's chart placing. Howard Teitelbaum offered these vital statistics about the record: "Recorded (basic tracks) on 3 Feb 1968, overdubs on 6 Feb, mixed to mono on 15 Feb, and released as a single (backed with "The Inner Light") on 15 Mar. Stereo mix not done until 2 Dec 1969, for use in the U.S. compilation LP "Hey Jude" (released 26 Feb 1970)." Don't care to hear 'em play a tango Ain't in the mood to dig a mambo It's way too early for the congo So keep a-rockin' that piano #02) Chuck Berry: "Rock & Roll Music" (1957/58) [8] {6} Brian Phillips wrote: "Also recorded by the BEAtles and the BEAch Boys, but surprisingly, not by the BEAu Brummels." Many other people mentioned these BEA versions too. Howard Teitelbaum mentioned that the session players were Lafayette Leake (piano), Willie Dixon (bass), and Fred Below (drums). In his wonderful 1970 book "The Aesthetics of Rock," Richard Meltzer theorizes that Berry's singing "congo" instead of the correct "conga" was predicting the outbreak of African nationalism a couple of years later! You have made the moment Into happy hours And in just that moment Changed the rain cloud into flowers And I can see that you're afraid You think it's some kind of mistake that you've made But let me set your heart at ease 'Cause I'm down on my bended knees #03) The Blues Project: "No Time Like the Right Time" (1967) [96] {-} She started to giggle when I told her That I'd teach her things she never learned at school #04) Jimmy Clanton: "Go, Jimmy, Go" (1959/60) [5] {19} Rick Schubert noted that Clanton played the male lead character Johnny in the movie "Go, Johnny, Go!" (whose title came from the Chuck Berry song and not this one). On at least one re-issue album the song is preceded by a false start and studio talk featuring Clanton asking producer Johnny Vincent: "Am I singing Mickey Mouse enough?" I feel so lonely night and day I can't get your love, I must stay away #05) Count Five: "Psychotic Reaction" (1966) [5] {-} The EJs & Co. noted: "Written by the band's members, Kenn Ellner, Roy Chaney, Craig Atkinson, Sean Byrne, and John Michalski; produced by Joe Hooven and Hal Winn. This was the group's only song to reach the Hot 100." Well, the joke's on me, I'm off to join the circus Oh, Mr Barnum, save a place for me Shoot me out of a cannon, I don't care Let the people point at me and stare I'll tell the world that woman - wherever she may be - That mean, fickle woman made a crying clown out of me #06) James Darren: "Goodbye Cruel World" (1961) [3] {-} Howard Teitelbaum wrote: "Written by Gloria Shayne. What sounds like a calliope in the background is actually Shayne's voice, recorded and played back at double speed. Demo version of song was recorded by Tony Orlando (whose version was nearly released). Song's popularity was helped by two bits of promotion: First, Darren sang it during a guest shot on The Donna Reed Show. Second, Colpix Records producer Stu Phillips obtained a set of novelty figurines to send to influential radio people; these featured a man with his head in a toilet, preparing to flush himself into oblivion, entitled, of course, Goodbye Cruel World!" The EJs & Co. said that it was Darren's biggest hit. Team Asia noted that Darren sang a different version (about joining the army) on The Donna Reed Show. Every evening when all my day's work is through I call my baby and ask her what she would do I mention movies, but she don't seem to dig that And then she asks me why don't I come to her flat And have some soda and let the evening pass by By diggin' records beside a groovy hi-fi #07) Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames: "Yeh Yeh" (1965) [21] {-} There were three guesses of the Everly Brothers! My love must be a kind of blind love I can't see anyone but you Are the stars out tonight? I don't know if it's cloudy or bright #08) The Flamingos: "I Only Have Eyes for You" (1959) [11] {3} The EJs & Co.'s remarks follow: "Written by Harry Warren; produced by George Goldner (these facts were also mentioned by Barry Silk). The Flamingos' biggest hit, it is an old standard which was originally a Busby Berkeley production number in the 1934 film "Dames." In 1934, there were three artists who had hits with the song: Ben Selvin & His Orchestra, Eddy Duchin & His Orchestra, and Jane Froman. After The Flamingos revived it, three other contemporary artists had hits with it: the Lettermen (in 1966), Jerry Butler (1972), and Art Garfunkel (1975). Shoo-bop-she-bop..." Several other entrants also mentioned the Garfunkel version, and Rick Schubert and Howard Teitelbaum each mentioned the 1934 hit versions. The latter added that the film version was sung by Dick Powell. I drink sweet wine for breakfast, I slept but an hour or so I smiled a little in the silence, deciding on where to go "Meet me under the whale at the Natural History Museum" I think that's what she said, a little bit sad about having to leave them Yawning in the sun, it's like a child I run #09) Herman's Hermits: "Museum" (1967) [39] {-} White chalk written on red brick Our love told in a heart It's there drawn in the playground #10) The Hollies: "Jennifer Eccles" (1968) [40] {-} Could anyone please tell me what the next line in the lyric is? It sounds like "Love, kiss, hate our ado", which makes no sense whatsoever! Hey, now, one day you will see You'll never find a guy like me Who'll love you right Both day and night #11) J.J. Jackson: "But It's Alright" (1966,1969) [22,45] {4,-} Rick Schubert said that his real name is Jerome Louis Jackson, and that he wrote "I'm Your Puppet," which was a hit for James & Bobby Purify (GOLQ08). The Delphi Trivia Club pointed out that there are 3 songs named "It's All Right" and 2 others named "It's Alright", which are all listed as different songs (as opposed to different artists' versions of the same song.) "It's All Right" is listed for the Impressions (#4 in 1963), Jim Capaldi (#55 in 1975) and Sam Cooke (#93 in 1961). There is a fourth song, "It's All Right (You're Just in Love), by the Tams, #79 in 1964. "It's Alright" is listed for Adam Faith (#31 in 1965) and Graham Central Station (#92 in 1975). "It's Alright" was recently remade by Huey Lewis and the News. This story ends, yes It was no lie Names have been changed, dear To protect you and I #12) The Jive Five: "My True Story" (1961) [3] {1} Jamie Lubin said that the song was co-written by Eugene Pitt, lead singer of The Jive Five, after his girlfriend married his best friend. Throughout history There have been many songs written About the eternal triangle #13) The Kingston Trio: "Tom Dooley" (1958) [1] {9} The EJs & Co. commented: "The Trio's first and biggest hit, their only #1 song, and a million seller. Based on "Tom Dula," a traditional American folk song." The Delphi Trivia Club and Rick Schubert each said that "Tom Dula" was written in 1866. Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps Don't you work as hard as you play Make up, break up, everything is shake-up Guess it had to be that way #14) The Mamas & The Papas: "Creeque Alley" (1967) [5] {-} Jim Carson expressed his opinion that this is the best song of the whole decade. The EJs & Co. remarked: "A musical biography of the group; the song title is the name of the street in the Virgin Islands on which the group lived. It was the group's last song to make the top 10." Jamie Lubin said that the song was written by Jon and Michelle Gilliam Phillips. Rick Schubert also mentioned the Virgin Islands bit. Ron Crandall noted that Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty had earlier been in a band called the Mugwumps! I let you go Oh what a fool I was to hurt you so But now I know All of the good times, big city sights I had enough of bright party lights They'll never make up for long lonely nights #15) Garnet Mimms: "I'll Take Good Care of You" (1966) [30] {15} Barry Silk wrote: "Produced and co-written by Jerry Ragavoy. Ragavoy was a Philadelphia producer and arranger who had successes with the Majors and the Castelles. Mimms was born in Ashton, West Virginia and moved to Philadelphia with his family as a boy, graduating from Simon Gratz High School." Baby, can't you see that I'm a desperate man I get high just thinking about you You know what they say about the bird in the hand And that's why I ain't leaving without you #16) The Mojo Men: "Sit Down I Think I Love You" (1967) [36] {-} Many entrants commented that this was originally a Stephen Stills song recorded by Buffalo Springfield on their first album, and that The Mojo Men were once led and later produced by Sly Stone [although this song, recorded after the band's leaving the Autumn label for Reprise, was produced by Lenny Waronker]. Team Corning added the info that The Mojo Men included Jimmy Alaimo, Paul Curcio, Don Metchik and Dennis DeCarr [the band later changed their name to The Mojo when the female Jan Errico joined them on drums!] I'll get me another woman, you can find another man Every time you hear a rock 'n' roll band Every time you hear a rock 'n' roll band All you wanna do, baby, is to hold my hand #17) Rick Nelson: "If You Can't Rock Me" (1963) [100] {17} Norm Katuna remarked that the song "...was done originally in '57 by a group called The Strikes who were also on Imperial. The Strikes' version is a real rock-a-billy record whereas Rick's was just a 60s rock-and-roll record." But Rick Schubert pointed out that Nelson's version appeared on an album as early as '57! Whenever I detect members of the other sex I play the game I do so well, oh #18) The O'Kaysions: "Girl Watcher" (1968) [5] {6} The EJs & Co. noted that this was the first and biggest hit for this R&B sextet and a million seller. Several entries gave the artist as The Occasions. The late sixties and early seventies were the golden years of contorted black group names; even a veteran group like The Jive Five (see song #12) felt the need to change their name to The Jyve Fyve! Hold my hand and promise That you'll always love me too Make me know you'll love me The same way I love you, little girl You got me at your mercy Now that I'm in love with you So please don't take advantage 'Cause you know my love is true Darling, please, please love me too #19) Elvis Presley: "I Beg of You" (1958) [1] {5} What you gonna do tonight When you need some loving arms to hold you tight? Tell me, what you gonna do tonight When you need my happy voice to tell you goodnight? Honey, but you can't let that be no problem You gotta come on home and help me solve 'em #20) Otis Redding: "My Lover's Prayer" (1966) [61] {10} They walk, and I'll walk They twist, and I'll twist They shimmy, and I'll shimmy They fly, and I'll fly #21) The Rivieras: "California Sun" (1964) [5] {-} The EJs & Co. said that this was the first and biggest hit for this teenage rock band from South Bend, Indiana (NOT California), a remake of Joe Jones' 1961 recording, and that their favorite phrase from the song is "Well the girls are frisky in Old 'Frisco...." The Joe Jones version, which hit #89 on the pop chart, was also mentioned by Brian Phillips, Rick Schubert, and Howard Teitelbaum, who added: "His version had a slower, brassier arrangement (similar to his "You Talk Too Much"), and had somewhat different lyrics. For example, the analogous section in his version is: They walk that walk They talk that talk They twist like this They shimmy, don't you hear me" Laid aside foolish pride Learned that truth from tears I cried Spread the news, I'm on my way, oop-pah-oh-yeah-yeah All my blues is blown away, oop-pah-oh-yeah-yeah I'm bringing you love so true 'Cause that's what I owe to you #22) Helen Shapiro: "Walkin' Back to Happiness" (1961) [100] {-} So open your heart and you'll open the door To all the treasures I'm looking for Hold me, kiss me, and say you'll be mine evermore #23) Sunny & The Sunliners: "Rags to Riches" (1963) [45] {n/c} The EJs & Co. wrote: "The same group went under the name The Sunglows when they originally released the song on a different label earlier in 1963. The song is most closely identified with Tony Bennett who had a million-selling #1 version of it in 1953. Elvis Presley also recorded it in 1971." Huey Meaux, who produced this song and many other Texas rock classics including Sir Douglas Quintet's "She's About a Mover," was recently arrested rather spectacularly on child- molestation charges. It's written on the wind It's everywhere I go So if you really love me Come on and let it show #24) The Troggs: "Love Is All Around" (1968) [7] {-} Jessica Raine mentioned that it was recently (1994) re-recorded by Wet Wet Wet. The Delphi Trivia Club noted that Wet Wet Wet's version was featured in the British hit movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral" [which is your quiz master's favourite film of the 1990s so far, by the way]. Barry Silk said that the song was written by Reg Presley, lead singer of The Troggs, who also wrote "With a Girl Like You" and "I Can't Control Myself" for them. The EJs & Co. noted that this was the last Hot 100 song for The Troggs. He lived in the sand at the Isle of Man The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key So they rode on his head in their furry donkey #25) The Who: "Happy Jack" (1967) [24] {-} Who expert Ron Crandall relates: "The barely audible yell - 'I saw ya'' - at the end of the song is Pete Townshend yelling at drummer Keith Moon. Moon, who had a poor singing voice, had nonetheless sung the falsetto lead on a couple surf style songs on a recent EP. He even had girls screaming at him during their recent Sweden tour, so he fashioned himself as a great singer. The Who tried Moon on vocals for the first few takes of Happy Jack, but the results were miserable. After he was dismissed as a singer, Moon took it upon himself to disrupt the subsequent takes. He was finally ordered to lay down in the control room, so that he wasn't visible to the rest of the group, because he kept making them laugh as they were trying to sing. Never one to be denied, Moon popped up in front of the control room window during the last few bars of the song, eliciting Townshend's yell." The EJs & Co. said that it was written by Pete Townshend. A couple of people asked "Are you really sure about that last line?" No, but I thought being unreally sure was good enough. Tie-breakers: Drunk man, streetcar Foot slip, there you are! #T1) The Crickets: "I'm Lookin' for Someone to Love" (1957) [-] {-} The EJ's & Co. said that the song was written by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty and produced by Norman Petty, and that it was the B-side of "That'll Be The Day," a fact also pointed out by Barry Silk, the Genasys Team and Norm Katuna, who added: "Jackie DeShannon remade two Crickets records on Liberty. Her version of I'm Looking for Someone to Love was the flip of her rendition of Oh, Boy! from '64." "If I didn't know that this was in here because it was a favorite saying of Buddy Holly's mother, I would have guessed that Our Hero had bumped off his cheatin' ex-girlfriend (no wonder he's lookin' for someone...)" (Lisa Saunders Boffa, author of the annotated Buddy Holly discography on the World Wide Web) If you both have faith you'll find a sunny day Don't be bothered by what smaller minds have to say #T2) The Remains: "Don't Look Back" (1966) [-] {-} Brian Phillips said that the song was written by Billy Vera. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the avg. no. of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place).
