Date: Fri, 16 May 1997 15:06:18 GMT RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #108 Special congratulations goes out to STEVE SHARKNESS, who wins GOLQ108 with a perfect score! This happened to be Steve's first GOLQ entry. Congratulations are also in order for the REALLY ROCKIN' IN BOSTON and JAMIE LUBIN teams, who tied for second place missing only one tie-breaker each. MICHAEL FLINT and THE GYPSY'S CARAVAN tied for fourth place who each identified all songs but the tie-breakers. Outstanding scores were also achieved by RICK & KATHY SCHUBERT, THE GENASYS TEAM, TEAM ASIA, MIKE WEAVER'S TEAM, L'EQUIPE, THE DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB and the EJ'S. Excellent scores were achieved by LORI BAILEY & ED TOUTANT, MIKE GESSNER & DAN DiNARDO, CURT MILLER & STEVE POTTER, THE WICKED BOYS, JAMES WHITE and BRIAN & PAM. Many teams were able to identify the "British Invasion" theme. I was happy to see that many GOLQ regulars scored higher than usual. 17 entrants scored 400 or more. All songs, except for #T1, were identified by at least 7 entrants. Two songs that all entrants were able to fully identify were "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "She's Not There". Hope everyone had fun with this quiz! One final note: If you're interested in hearing excerpts of some of the lesser known songs from this quiz, check out Rick Schubert's anonymous ftp site at ftp://ftp.cts.com:/users/sd/s/schubert. I've provided Rick with several .wav files from this quiz: #02,04,12,13,22,24,T1. Each .wav file contains the quiz lyrics. If you need help, contact Rick via e-mail. Thanks to all who entered! GOLQ109 was already posted by Marc Dashevsky. Additional harmonica overdubs (takes 14-28) were recorded on 13 March, after which mono and stereo mixes were made (from takes 6, 13, 17, 20, 21, and 23). Releases in the UK on 11 April 63 as the B-side to "From Me to You" (the Fabs' 3rd single). The version appearing in the US in 1964 (as the B-side to "Do You Want to Know a Secret" and on the LP "The Beatles' Second Album") is a different mix, featuring a few extra harmonica overdubs (after the line "That's the kind of love that is too good to be true," and also at the very end of the song). They said that love was a lie Told me that I Should never try to find Somebody who'd be kind Kind to only me #02) Cilla Black: "It's For You" (1964) [79] {-} Team Asia notes: Written by Cilla's friends, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Lennon went on to fame as a vocalist and guitarist with Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band, while McCartney became a member of Linda Eastman's Wings. He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile The order is given, they move down the line But he'll stay behind And he'll meditate But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate #03) Eric Burdon & the Animals: "Sky Pilot (Part One)" (1968) [14] {-} The EJ's comment: Produced by Tom Wilson. The last Animals song to make it into the Top 40. Jamie notes: Surprisingly, on the Billboard charts longer than any other Animals' hit; only reached #40 in the UK. I know how quickly love can slip away Yes I know how love can die That's why I say I'm gonna try with all my heart To keep you happy so we'll never part #04) Chad & Jeremy: "I Don't Want To Lose You Baby" (1965) [35] {-} Time to get a move on, mmmm We will yell with all of our might #05) Dave Clark Five: "Catch Us If You Can" (1965) [4] {-} Several people mentioned this was the title song from DC5's 1965 film "Having A Wild Weekend" (which was originally titled "Catch Us If You Can"). T.P.Uschanov adds that the film was directed by John Boorman, who also did "Deliverance" and "Hope and Glory". Man will soon be standing on the moon above Just imagine all the things that he'll discover #06) Petula Clark: "Round Every Corner" (1965) [21] {-} Written by Tony Hatch. I'll be with you, darling, soon I'll be with you when the stars start falling #07) Cream: "Sunshine Of Your Love" (1968) [5] {-} The EJ's note: Produced by Felix Pappalardi, this was the supergroup's first and biggest hit, a million seller. Rick Schubert mentions this first charted 1/13/68 and remained on the charts for 14 weeks, peaking at #36, then reentered 7/6/68 and remained on the charts for 12 weeks, during which it peaked at #5. I know it's been said before Say you'll love me and I will be sure I'm in love with you now #08) Freddie & the Dreamers: "I'm Telling You Now" (1965) [1] {-} The EJ's say this was the first and only #1 hit for the Manchester quintet. Rick notes it was originally released in 1963 on Capitol 5053. The nighttime shadows disappear And with them go all your tears For the morning will bring joy For every girl and boy #09) Gerry & the Pacemakers: "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" (1964) [4] {-} This was the first and biggest hit for the Liverpool quartet. Rick notes it "Bubbled Under" at #112 in 1970. Just the two of us And nobody else in sight There's nobody else And I'm feeling good Just holding you tight #10) Herman's Hermits: "There's A Kind Of Hush" (1967) [4] {-} The EJ's comment: Produced by Mickie Most. This was the group's last top 10 and million selling song. Also recorded by The Carpenters in 1976. When we were in school our games were simple I played the janitor You played the monitor #11) Hollies: "Carrie-Ann" (1967) [9] {-} Produced by Ron Richards. And so I'm livin' for a dream Each lonely day spent looking for the sunshine I'll make believe that I don't care I'll tell my friends I love my life, I'm happy #12) Iveys: "Maybe Tomorrow" (1969) [67] {-} This Welsh rock quartet later became known as Badfinger. I know that it's late and I really must leave you alone But you're good to hold and I feel such a long way from home Yes, I know that our love is still new But I promise it's gonna be true #13) Tom Jones: "Love Me Tonight" (1969) [13] {-} Eyes full of sorrow Never wet Hands full of money All in debt #14) Jonathan King: "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" (1965) [17] {-} The EJ's say it was the first and biggest hit for the Londoner. My girlfriend's run off with my car And gone back to her ma and pa Tellin' tales of drunkenness and cruelty #15) Kinks: "Sunny Afternoon" (1966) [14] If the song of the swallow Could reveal my sorrow Then my dear He would sing just for you #16) Manfred Mann: "Come Tomorrow" (1965) [50] {-} Rick notes that Manfred Mann was born Michael Lubowitz in Johannesburg, South Africa and Paul Jones sang lead. Jyrki said this song was originally recorded by Marie Knight. But it's home The only life I've ever known Only you know how I loathe ... #17) Nashville Teens: "Tobacco Road" (1964) [14] {-} The Dutch Officials comment: Covered by Shocking Blue on "Live in Japan". Written by John D. Loudermilk. When I see her coming down the street I get so shaky and I feel so weak I tell my eyes "look the other way" But they don't seem to hear a word I say #18) Peter & Gordon: "I Go To Pieces" (1965) [9] {-} Many people observed that this was written by Del Shannon. One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast #19) Procol Harum: "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (1967) [5] {22} The EJ's comment: The first and only Top 10 song for the group. The melody is based on the Bach cantata "Sleepers Awake." Also recorded---but with much less success---by The Hesitations (1968), R.B. Greaves (1970), and Hagar, Schon, Aaronson, Shrieve (1984). Rick notes it was written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche. Hey, I thought I was smart, I'd won her heart Didn't think I'd do, but now I see She's worse to him than me, let her go ahead Take his love instead, and one day she will see #20) Searchers: "Needles And Pins" (1964) [13] {-} The EJ's comment: written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono; produced by Tony Hatch. A cover of the single done by Jackie DeShannon a year earlier, the Searchers' version offers an early example of the electric twelve-string guitar sound (which was soon to become the trademark of The Byrds); the Searchers' sound was actually produced by two six-string guitars playing in unison. The song was also made notable by Tony Jackson's accent which made the word "pins" sound like "pin-za." It was the Searchers' first hit. Later recorded by Smokie (1977) and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Stevie Nicks (1986). I tried so hard All summer through Not to think too much of you But the more I try The more I find I just can't leave the past behind #21) Dusty Springfield: "All I See Is You" (1966) [20] {-} Oh there's never been a woman who could treat me like you do Who could trample on my pride and play around as much as you Girl you really shake my mind up with your cheating and your lies Till at last I make my mind up and I turn to say goodbye #22) Tremeloes: "Suddenly You Love Me" (1968) [44] {-} Thank you, driver, for getting me here You'll be an inspector, have no fear I don't want to cause no fuss #23) Who: "Magic Bus" (1968) [25] Written by Who guitarist Pete Townshend. We walked across the sand And the sea and the sky and the castles were blue I stood and held your hand And the spray flew by and the feathers floated by I stood and held your hand And nobody else's hand will ever do #24) Bill Wyman: "In Another Land" (1967/68) [87] {-} Written by Wyman. Wyman is the bass player for the Rolling Stones. The flip side of this record is "The Latern" credited to the Rolling Stones. Well no one told me about her What could I do Well no one told me about her Though they all knew #25) Zombies: "She's Not There" (1964) [2] {-} The EJ's comment: Written by Rod Argent, the Zombies' keyboardist. The first and biggest hit for the quintet. Also recorded by Santana in 1977. TIE BREAKERS: Something's giving me hell, baby Though I said I would be true There's someone new It's time to go What makes me do it I don't know I'm sorry Sorry I'm not worthy Of you #T1) Glenda Collins: "Something I've Got To Tell You" (1966) [-] {-} Joe Haertel comments: Produced by legendary producer Joe Meek, who produced "Telstar" by the Tornadoes and "Have I The Right" by the Honeycombs. Joe Meek rarely produced female artists. Steve Sharkness notes: "Something I've Got To Tell You" was recorded first by The Honeycombs (as an album track) with Honey Lantree on lead vocals. What a thing to happen Left without a friend What a thing to happen Funny how true love can end I can tell that she just doesn't care How can I make her see I'm in love and it just isn't fair #T2) Ivy League: "Funny How Love Can Be" (1965) [-] {-} Steve Sharkness comments: "Funny How Love Can Be" was covered by The Rockin' Berries but with slightly different lyrics. Before I knew about this original version, I was familiar with the Kit Kats' version that appeared on their "It's Just A Matter Of Time" LP. Special mention goes to Bob Storch who identified this song as by the Kit Kats! For those of you unfamiliar with the Kit Kats, although they never had a nationally charted hit, they had several regional hits in the Philadelphia area during the mid-60s. Norm Katuna mentioned a version by Danny Hutton that 'bubbled-under' at chart position #120 in 1966. _______________________________________________________________________ THEME: "British Invasion" -- All songs recorded by artists from the United Kingdom.
