Backed by Don Costa's orchestra. Diana was the Anka family babysitter. Anka, a 15-year-old from Ottawa, won a trip to New York in a Campbell's Soup contest, and brought "Diana" and four other songs with him to ABC-Paramount. Costa, who was the label's director of A&R, loved "Diana" and asked Anka to have his parents come down to New York immediately to sign a contract. His instincts were right: "Diana" became the first #1 song in the history of ABC-Paramount. Bobby Rydell also recorded the song in 1965; it was Rydell's last single to make the Hot 100. He likes to keep his fire engine clean It's a clean machine #02) Beatles: "Penny Lane" (1967) [1] {-} The EJ's & co. noted that it was a number #1 song and million seller, and they added that it was from the album "Magical Mystery Tour." Howard Teitelbaum provided the following information: Basic tracks recorded 29 Dec 1966, with many additional overdubs during the following several weeks. The 17 Jan 1967 mix was used to press a small number of copies that were rushed to the U.S. for advance radio-station promo purposes. This version, now a rarity, features an extra horn bit at the end. The master version (minus the trumpet coda) was from the 25 Jan mix. I know time's gonna take its toll We'll have to pay for the love we stole It's a sin and we know it's wrong Oh, when our love keeps coming on strong #03) James Carr: "The Dark End Of The Street" (1967) [77] {10} The definitive sixties southern soul ballad. James Carr's career suffered from mental problems, and he disappeared from sight in the early seventies without achieving the success he clearly deserved. He has made a small-scale comeback during the last ten years, and his classic records have been reissued on several compilations. Jamie noted that the song was in the soundtrack of (& performed by) The Commitments. Clarence Carter also recorded a memorable version in 1969, titled as "Making Love (At The Dark End Of The Street)". I won't tell my mother I won't tell my brother They don't think that we're of age #04) Chordettes: "Just Between You And Me" (1957) [8] {-} The song reached #8 on the Jockey chart and #19 on the Top 100 Sides chart. The single hit #15 on the Best Seller chart, and the flip side, "Soft Sands", also charted on its' own, peaking at #73 on the Top 100 Sides chart. I'd love to glide to a rainbow Off where the clouds go dancing by #05) Petula Clark: "The Cat In the Window (The Bird In the Sky)" (1967) [26] {-} Written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, who also wrote many of the Turtles' hits. They never get tired of putting me down And I never know when I come around What I'm gonna find Don't let them make up your mind #06) Neil Diamond: "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" (1967) [10] {-} The EJ's & Co. said: Composed by Neil Diamond; produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. From the album "Just For You". Sanford Stein added that it was re-done for the movie "Pulp Fiction" by Urge Overkill in 1994. Soft words has been spoken So sweet and low But my mind is made up Love has got to go #07) Fats Domino: "Valley of Tears" (1957) [6] {2} Jamie noted that it was written by Dave Bartholomew & Fats. The song was also recorded by Buddy Holly. There goes my baby With someone new She sure looks happy I sure am blue #08) Everly Brothers: "Bye Bye Love" (1957) [2] {5} The EJ's & co. commented: Written by Boudleaux Bryant and Felice Bryant; produced by Archie Bleyer. The Brothers' first hit, a million seller and #1 on the Country chart. The song was reportedly rejected by 30 acts before The Everlys convinced Bleyer, the owner of Cadence Records, to let them try it. "Bye Bye Love" turned out to be the most successful single in Cadence's history. Shortly thereafter in 1957, country great Webb Pierce recorded the song; while not a big hit, it was Pierce's first single to make the Pop chart during the rock era. Lord, what's happening to this human race I can't even see one friendly face Brothers fight brothers Sisters reap their rights While silver charms bear fruits of poison lies #09) Aretha Franklin: "Take a Look" (1967) [56] {28} One of Aretha's mid-sixties Columbia recordings; released as a single only after she had already left the company and had a couple of big hits on Atlantic. Remember the day I set you free I told you, you could always count on me, darling From that day on I made a vow I'll be there when you want me, someway, somehow #10) Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (1967) [19] {3} The EJ's & Co. commented: Written by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. From the album "United," it was the first hit for Marvin & Tammi as a duet. In 1970, Diana Ross had a #1 hit with the song. Mortals have dreams Of Love's perfect schemes #11) Bonnie Guitar: "Dark Moon" (1957) [6] {-} The EJ's & Co. said that it was the first and only Top 10 hit for the Seattle vocalist/guitarist. They added that Gale Storm also had a hit with song at the same time. Jamie mentioned that it was written by Ned Miller. Well, I'm one step behind you But still I can't find you #12) Jay & the Techniques: "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" (1967) [6] {8} The EJ's & Co. noted that it was the first and only Top 10 hit for the septet from Allentown, PA. Oh-oh, we love in the night mysterious That's when you said you care You make me seem delirious That's why I love you so-o-o #13) Jesters: "So Strange" (1957) [100] {-} The first of the Jesters' two pop chart entries - the second was their version of the Chantels' "The Plea", which hit #74 in March 1958. David Clowney (=Dave "Baby" Cortez) and Paul Winley (the owner of Winley records) were originally credited as writers, but - as Jamie noted - Adam Jackson (tenor lead) has later claimed that he wrote the song. However, as Antonio Torralba pointed out, the lyrics of the song are actually very similar to Cole Porter's "So In Love", which has lines like this: In love with the night mysterious, The night when you first were there. In love with my joy delirious, The thought that you might care. Then there's also the Five Dollars' "So Strange" (Fortune 826), which had been released already in 1956. Does anybody know for sure if it's the same song? My days are so lonely My nights are so blue I'm here and I'm lonely I-I'm wa-a-aiting for you #14) Little Richard & His Band: "Send Me Some Lovin'" (1957) [54] {3} The flip side of "Lucille". Jamie mentioned that the song was a bigger hit in '63 for Sam Cooke. He calls me on the phone About three times a day #15) Martha & the Vandellas: "Jimmy Mack" (1967) [10] {1} The EJ's & Co. commented: A #1 hit on the R&B chart, and the last single by the group to reach the Top 10. Sheena Easton also recorded the song in 1986. Soft as the rain That falls on summer flowers Warm as the sunlight Shining on her golden hair #16) Al Martino: "Mary In the Morning" (1967) [27] {-} A beautiful folk rock song that was also recorded by Glen Campbell. My tongue gets tied When I try to speak #17) Elvis Presley: "All Shook Up" (1957) [1] {1} The EJ's & Co. commented: Written by Otis Blackwell. A four-million seller, it hit #1 on the Pop, R&B, and Country charts. Blackwell was reportedly inspired to write the song after seeing one of the owners of his publishing company shaking a bottle of cola. Included on the album "Elvis' Golden Records." Later recorded by Suzi Quatro (1974) and Billy Joel (1992). Pete Olden added that this song was Presley's his longest-running national chart record; according to Rick Schubert, it was #1 on the Juke Box charts (9 weeks), Best Seller Charts (8 weeks), Top 100 charts (8 weeks), Jockey charts (7 weeks), R&B charts (4 weeks), and Country charts (1 week). I'll be Jack and you'll be Jill (yip yip whip bop de boom diddy boom diddy) Love me till my heart grows still (yip yip whip bop de boom diddy boom diddy) Baby, when you hear me shout (yip yip whip bop de boom diddy boom diddy) A-kiss me quick, knock me out (yip yip whip bop de boom) #18) Johnnie Ray: "Yes Tonight, Josephine" (1957) [12] {-} The EJ's & Co. said: Backed by Ray Conniff's orchestra and chorus. Ray's last single to reach the US Top 50. The song was a #1 hit in the UK. I'm going red and my tongue's getting tied #19) Rolling Stones: "Let's Spend The Night Together" (1967) [55] {-} The EJ's & Co. noted that it was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. They added that it was the B-side of "Ruby Tuesday," a #1 song. Sandman swings the lantern To show that all is well #20) Seekers: "Morningtown Ride" (1967) [44] {-} Brian & Pam commented: Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley, Athol Guy and Judith Durham, from Melbourne, Australia, recently reformed. Switched from folk to pop on a trip to Britain in the mid-60s, and made it HUGE. Set the Australian record for largest concert crowd - 250,000. Brian had one dance with Judith on a New Year's Eve in the early 70s. The EJ's & Co. said that the song was produced by Tom Springfield, and added that it was also the last Seekers single to make the Hot 100. According to Lee Lester, it was a big number one hit in Australia. Winter lives in my heart In the times we're apart Summer sings a song or two When he says "I love you true" #21) Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood: "Lady Bird" (1967) [20] {-} Written by Lee, noted Jamie. Of course, Steve Winwood had been the lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group. Seems like years ago we met On a day I can't forget 'Cause that's when we fell in love #23) Tune Weavers: "Happy, Happy Birthday Baby" (1957) [5] {4} The Tune Weavers were a group from Woburn, Massachusetts, consisting of Margo Sylvia (lead), John Sylvia, Gilbert Lopez and Charlotte Davis. You're still living in a paper doll world Living ain't easy Loving's twice as tough #24) Bobby Vee and the Strangers: "Come Back When You Grow Up" (1967) [3] {-} Several people noted that this song was Bobby Vee's last Top 20 hit. Like a sweet magnolia tree My love blossomed tenderly My life grew sweeter through the years #25) Stevie Wonder: "I Was Made To Love Her" (1967) [2] {1} The EJ's & Co. mentioned that King Curtis & The Kingpins recorded an instrumental version later in 1967. TIE-BREAKERS: I'll do anything you tell me to (I really really love you baby) I'll do your cooking and your laundry, too (I really really love you baby) I always wanna be a-close to you (I really really love you baby) In the morning, in the evening and the night time, too (I really really love you baby) #T1) Ann Cole with the Suburbans: "Each Day" (1957) [-] {-} This fantastic uptempo number was the flip side of Ann Cole's #14 R&B hit, "In the Chapel". Although Ann Cole was never as popular as artists like LaVern Baker or Ruth Brown were, she was one of the best fifties female R&B vocalists. Her real name was Cynthia Coleman, and she had started out as a gospel singer in the family group the Colemanaires, with whom she had recorded a couple of singles for Timely, a local Newark company. By 1956 she was recording R&B material for the small Baton label - her first R&B chart entry was a cover version of Shep Wooley's "Are You Satisfied", and she went on the have several other successful releases, including an early version of "Got My Mojo Working", which was also recorded by Muddy Waters around the same time. In the early sixties she was in injured in a serious car accident, which left her confined to a wheel chair for the rest of her life. Although her last single, "Don't Stop the Wedding" b/w "Have Fun" (on Roulette) was a minor hit in 1962, she eventually decided to return to gospel music. Three of her songs were included on the soundtrack of the 1985 Finnish movie "Calamari Union", directed by Aki Kaurismaki. (Sha-la-laa) Every day I look at the world from my window (Sha-la-laa) Chilly chilly is the evening time #T2) Kinks: "Waterloo Sunset" (1967) [-] {-} A top ten hit in the UK, and very popular in many other countries, too, this classic song never charted in the US. _______________________________________________________________________ THEMES: 1957 and 1967 All songs reached their peak position on the Billboard pop charts either in 1957 or in 1967.
