The team of Antonio Torralba, Dominic Begg, Ben Rowdon and Tunde submitted an almost identical entry and lost by only a very narrow margin. Close behind was the Really Rockin' In Boston team, and the fourth place went to the team of Barry Silk, Jenny McCaw, Scooter Magruder and Joe Haertel. Randy Price and Jamie Lubin also achieved near-perfect scores. As some entrants noted, the quiz included a number of patriotic and message songs, and there were many songs that dealt either with war and soldiers or with US Presidents. And although we didn't mention this in the preface of our quiz, there was also a connection between all songs: they were all recorded by American artists. Marc Dashevsky has already posted GOLQ161. Thanks to all who entered! (1959) [32] {16} The backing vocalists on this song included Etta James, who recalls that "the pay was pathetic, but the fact that Chuck never fed us a real lunch during a long day of singing - that's what sticks in my mind. He handed out those little yellow crackers with peanut butter in the middle, the vending machine variety. Man, I was starving." It is in the film CADENCE, starring Charlie and Martin Sheen and Laurence Fishburn. The movie is notable only for the scenes of the soldier-inmates singing and marching to "Chain Gang." If you see me comin', better step aside A lot of men didn't, a lot of men died One fist of iron, the other of steel If the right one don't get you, then the left one will #08) Tennessee Ernie Ford: "Sixteen Tons" (1955) [1] {-} Johnny Desmond's version is also a valid answer. Jessica Raine said that the songs "Chain Gang" and "Sixteen Tons" were performed as a medley in the 50's-doo-wop musical _Forever Plaid_. A young man rode with his head held high Under the Texas sun And no one guessed that a man so blessed Would perish by the gun Lord, would perish by the gun #09) Connie Francis: "In the Summer Of His Years" (1963/64) [46] {n/c} A tribute to President John F. The song was originally meant to be a protest song that commented the current civil rights situation. One of the original verses was "Only in America/Land of opportunity/ Can they save a seat in the back of the bus just for me./Only in America/Where they preach the Golden Rule/Will they start to march when my kids want to go to school." Fearing that the record would never get played, Atlantic Records rejected the song, and Leiber and Stoller reluctantly agreed to tone down the lyrics to meet with the label's wishes. However, when the Drifters sang the new lyrics, the song became an ironic statement - a black group singing about what was obviously not going on - and Atlantic rejected it once again. Rather than leave "Only In America" unreleased, Leiber and Stoller offered the song to Jay & the Americans, whose label United Artists bought the master from Atlantic and replaced the Drifters' vocals with the voices of Jay Black, Sandy Yaguda, Kenny Vance and Howie Kane. However, the writers were terribly disappointed. Because of the lyric changes and the fact that a white group sang it, the original message of the song had been effectively negated. "I bumped into Barry Mann," recalls Leiber. "He said, 'Hey man, how could you do that to our song?' I said, 'Atlantic was never going to release The Drifters' version, so we changed it from a powerful protest into patriotic pap.'" Your mother tells me that you're not at home Each time I call you on the telephone Oh, I'm so lost and alone #12) Lettermen: "Come Back Silly Girl" (1962) [17] {-} Written by Barry Mann.
