Barely missing to make it a four-way tie at first was the Delphi Trivia Club, who scored 459, and The Gypsy's Caravan right behind them at 456. Nine entrants managed to crack 400, and six additional teams missed 400 by just a few points. Our goal in this GOLQ was to provide a quiz whereby a 400 score was reasonably achieved, but a perfect score would be very challenging. We included five songs that we considered "stumpers" of varying degrees, and most everyone that bottlenecked around 400 missed the same five stumpers. Because the top 19 entries missed virtually the same songs, we elected to be somewhat strict in our grading in order to avoid too many ties. See each song for an explanation of why we deducted single points on certain songs. We found it amazing that, among the six entrants that narrowly missed 400, "8-Track Minds" and Ray LeBov not only tied at 395, but missed the same questions and got penalized the exact same minor points for the exact same reasons! We were impressed with the number of entrants that scored over 300, and we admire those of you who did not, but chose to play anyway (we have been knocking ourselves out for two years trying to break into the "Top 10" just one time, but can't seem to do it). Thanks to all for participating in our debut GOLQ. We hope you had fun, and please forgive us if we got too nit-picking in our grading....... Standby for the imminent release of GOLQ #174 (not by us). Should I think that you love me still? Or am I supposed to act just.....just like you're never coming back? Honey, am I supposed to be your friend, oh, Will we ever meet again? #01) Ann-Margret: What Am I Supposed To Do (1962) [82] {-} Comments by Tom: The lyrics above are from the middle spoken part of this sappy song (in the style of "Are You Lonesome Tonight"), which I bought just after I got a teenage crush on Ann-Margret in Pocketful of Miracles, one of her first movie roles. Now it's dark and I'm alone But I won't be afraid #02) Beach Boys: In My Room (l963) [23] {-} I'm in love for the first time, Don't you know it's gonna last; It's a love that lasts forever, It's a love that has no past. #03) Beatles with Billy Preston: Don't Let Me Down (1969) [35] {-} Deducted one point for failure to include Billy Preston I remember when I was a lad Times were hard and things were bad But there's a silver linin' behind ev'ry cloud #04) Johnny Cash: Daddy Sang Bass (1968) [42] {-} The last time I was down there They lost my shoes #05) Dave Clark Five: I Like It Like That (1965) [7] {-} A few folks commented that the lyric should read "I (vice "they") lost my shoes; no argument about that in the Chris Kenner version, but The Falk stands by his assessment that the audio on his recording of the DC5 version says, "They". Why am I longing each night and day Tell me you want me Oh tell me tell me you'll stay #06) 5 Chanels: The Reason (1958) [98] {-} No one identified this obscure doo-wop stumper offered by The Falk, from his record collection; group sounds like Chantels wanna-be's; we knew this would be a hard one, but thought at least one of the "GOLQ wizards" would have come up with the answer. Smilin' while you're walkin', laughin' while you're talkin', Happy as can be (happy happy happy) With your arms around him, you're so glad you found him, You never once look up to see me. #07) Fleetwoods: Outside My Window (1960) [28] {-} While the cats are ballin' You better stop your stallin' It's intermission in a minute #08) Georgia Gibbs: Dance With Me Henry (Wallflower) (1955) [1] {-} Deducted two points for failure to include (Wallflower), and one point for "(The Wallflower)" He taught me how (He taught me) Taught me how to watch (He taught me how to watch and fight and pray) #09) Edwin Hawkins' Singers Featuring Dorothy Combs Morrison: Oh Happy Day (1969) [4] {2} Jamie Lubin offered an interesting history of how this song came to become recorded and blossom into the big hit it was.....started as a fundraiser for a northern California youth group. Odia Coates (Paul Anka's partner in You're Having My Baby) was a member. Deducted one point for failure to include Dorothy Combs Morrison. See him at the seaside Talking with the fisherman #10) Impressions: Amen (1964) [7] {17} Featured in the 1963 movie, Lilies of the Field, with Sidney Poiter You call my name It sounds so nice I could never explain #11) Tommy James & the Shondells: I Like The Way (1967) [25] {-} This whole thing has sure been a lesson to me......Bang! You're dead. #12) Kingston Trio: Bad Man Blunder (1960) [32] {-} Wondered how many people would identify this spoken blurb at the end of the song....everyone did pretty well, but I had to dock a point to many entries that listed the title as Bad Man's Blunder, which makes more sense to me than the actual title. You can gamble for match sticks You can gamble for gold The stakes may be heavy or small; But if you haven't gambled for love and lost Then you haven't gambled at all. #13) Frankie Laine: Moonlight Gambler (1956) [3] {-} A pie in the face for being a sleepy bull toad #14) Lovin' Spoonful: Daydream (1966) [2] {-} Oh my dear I'm so lonely, Hurry back, hurry back, Oh my love hurry back I'm yours. #15) Dean Martin: Return To Me (1958) [4] {-} Jamie Lubin mentioned this song was featured in the movie "Striptease"....didn't know that. And suddenly I've found how wonderful a sound can be #16) Johnny Mathis: Maria (1960, 1961/62) [78/88] {-} Of the many recorded versions of this hit from West Side Story, Johnny Mathis' version was the only vocal arrangement to hit the Billboard charts, which it did on two separate occasions. Despite the fact that it only peaked at #78, most entrants were familiar with the song - probably due to the popularity of the musical - though not everyone identified Mathis as the artist. You never seem to notice I'm along, I just want you to want me, too How I hope and pray that you'll need me some day #17) Rick Nelson: String Along (1963) [25] {-} Deducted one point for mis-naming the artist as Ricky, as many did (he stopped billing himself as Ricky after Travelin' Man in 1961). Oh believe me, I've never been untrue. The things that you've heard aren't true dear Even though they made you cry. #18) Platters: You're Making A Mistake (1958) [50] {-} Less than successful follow-up to their number one hit, Twilight Time. I bought the record primarily because I liked the flip side, "My Old Flame," which was sung by their female, Zola Taylor (heard she was married at one time to Frankie Lyman); flip never charted on Billboard. Hold my hand and promise That you'll always love me true; Make me know you love me, The same way I love you, little girl #19) Elvis Presley: I Beg Of You (1958) [8] {5} Flip side of number #1 hit, "Don't." I searched for gold, and I found my gold And I found a girl who loved just me And I wished that I could love her, too #20) Marty Robbins: The Hanging Tree (1959) [38] {-} Had a million dollar funeral But it's a shame, nobody came Layin' up there, alone, dead #21) Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs: Black Sheep (1967) [68] {-} Another stumper from The Falk's collection; their last charted song on Billboard; some of you folks hurt his feelings by identifying a song he thought would be "ungettable." I remember children, feeding flocks of pigeons, I remember sunshine and you were mine #22) Spanky and Our Gang: Sunday Will Never Be the Same (1967) [9] {-} When you're the only surfer boy around #23) Trade Winds: New York's A Lonely Town (1965) [32] {-} The Falk claims this lyric is such a classic line that, in spite of the song's relatively low chart performance, entrants should be able to identify the song from that phrase alone. He was correct; just about everyone got it. Jonathan Cole added: "The saddest lyric in rock and roll - 'My Woodie's outside, covered with snow'" Deducted one point for mis-naming the artist "Tradewinds" as several did. I was prone to standing on corners Smokin' cigarettes and talkin' About anything that I didn't know #24) Vogues: The Land of Milk and Honey (1966) [29] {-} Once I was only a girl, young and afraid You came to me and you gave me love What a difference you made #25) Timi Yuro: The Love of A Boy (1962) [44] {-} This song, the follow-up to Yuro's hit, "What's A Matter Baby," received a lot of airplay in my hometown area (Hartford, CT), so I was surprised to find it had not fared better on Billboard, and that more entrants could not identify it. ------------- Tie-breakers: ------------- Little Billy Brown just-a caught my eye; Duck tail flyin' as he bopped by; Little Willie Crewcut sittin by me, But he's so dumb that he can't see #T1) Brenda Lee: Rock the Bop (1958) [-] {-} One of my early teeny-bop favorites - my first exposure to Brenda Lee....this female attempt by Brenda to sound like Elvis was released in late '57 and peaked ay #17 on the local Hartford, CT charts in Feb 58; I had intended to use the song in the heart of this quiz until I surprisingly found that it never charted on Billboard. Streetlights just don't shine as bright now As I walk alone each night now Everything looks faded all in gray Window shops all bright in color Now they all look so much duller Watching happiness all fade away #T2) Gary Lewis and the Playboys: Main Street {68/69} [-] {-} One of GL&P's follow-ups to "Sealed With A Kiss" that failed to chart prior to their last Billboard charter in '69, "Rhythm of the Rain." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chart ranks the recordings from most recognized to least recognized. The second number on a line denotes the average number of points scored on that recording (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place).
