My daily life has been conspiring against me in more ways than one. Second -- no matter what I do, there seem to be joint winners these days! (Having a screen name on AOL of five letters or less seems to help, too.) Congratulations to the winners, and to all the other participants, most of whom did very well on a tougher-than-usual quiz. Special thanks to those who said that they actually liked it! -- T P Uschanov ______________________________________________________________________ There is a "+" after Score below for each tie-breaker answered correctly; a "-" indicates partial credit. Barry Chamish: I know the version by Tommy Adderly. I wonder if anyone else heard it. It charted in Australia and Canada. I know you've been hurt By someone else I can tell by the way You carry yourself #02) Bobby Bland: "I'll Take Care Of You" (1960) [89] The GenaTeam: Brook Benton wrote the song but didn't score a hit with it in the US. When the raindrops start to fall Tears fall from my eyes Then my heart starts to crawl Don't you realize (realize) #03) The Bonnie Sisters: "Cry Baby" (1956) [18] Seldom have two chart hits with the same title been less alike than this and Garnet Mimms's "Cry Baby". Do they say we won't last When one week or two has passed? Do they keep telling you "By then we loved somebody new"? #04) Valerie Carr: "When The Boys Talk About The Girls" (1958) [19] Come and take me, take me in your arms Tell me I'm the only one that can share your charms Ooh, I don't care what they may say I'm gonna love you anyway #05) Dee Clark: "Nobody But You" (1958/59) [21] The whole world was my kingdom And your love the gem in my crown Then I saw your plans: a new romance And my love came tumbling down #06) The Crickets: "Fools Paradise" (1958) [58] Baby, shake that thing Yeah Yeah Hey Yeah Oh Yeah Hey Hey Hey Yeah #07) The Dartells: "Hot Pastrami" (1963) [11] This was supposed to be one of the give-away songs, but in the end only seven teams got it! Nearly everyone thought it would be "What'd I Say" by either Ray Charles or Bobby Darin. What's up now? I'll buy me a baby new And maybe I'll pick on you You'll hear me knocking at your door #08) The DeJohn Sisters: "(My Baby Don't Love Me) No More" (1954/55) [6] Hearing this record on the radio at Bellevue Hospital, New York City -- where they worked as nurses -- inspired The Bonnie Sisters (see #03 above) to start singing professionally. Now you don't need the address To find out where we'll be You can't help hearin' the music Halfway down the street #09) The Drifters: "Come On Over To My Place" (1965) [60] Radda-tadda-tadda Do-oo-oo #10) The Elegants: "Little Star" (1958) [1] Lose your blues to the sound of a drumbeat Lock out your cares to the rhythm of dancing feet Yeah, you got some bother, let it go now Where Old Man Worry just ain't got a chance, now #11) The Five Emprees: "Little Miss Sad" (1965) [74] The first pressings of the 45 (of which I have one) credited the artist as The Five Empressions; this was changed by the time the record charted, reportedly to avoid confusion with The Impressions. Fabian, Avalon, Ricky Nelson too Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Bobby Rydell, and I know darn well Presley's in there too #12) The Four Preps: "Got A Girl" (1960) [24] This record inspired a painting of the same name by British artist Peter Blake -- which incorporates not only a copy of the 45, but photographs of all the singers mentioned in these lyrics, in the order of mention! There's a picture of it at: http://www.lacomb-roach-press.com/arthistory/pop1/Pblak1.jpg Baby, I can't believe that you're the same sweet girl That I once knew Baby, the changes come about and it don't look Too good on you It seems so strange You're puttin' me through changes Baby, you started doin' Things you should not be doin' #13) Jay & The Americans: "Livin' Above Your Head" (1966) [76] Their best record, in my opinion -- almost soulful. A love that we would share forevermore When I'm your baby #14) Barbara Lewis: "Make Me Your Baby" (1965) [11] Wind it up, baby Oooh, shake it to your daddy I'm gonna ride that train tonight Goodbye! #15) Matt Lucas: "I'm Movin' On" (1963) [56] There were three guesses of "I'm On Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis. Right label (Smash), wrong song. Although this is a quite Jerry Lee-type version of Hank Snow's old C&W classic! If you put them all together Much to your surprise (oh, tell me why) You'll find a bit of heaven Right before your eyes #16) The Murmaids: "Popsicles And Icicles" (1963/64) [3] Now when you're feeling low And the fish won't bite #17) The Music Explosion: "Little Bit O' Soul" (1967) [2] One of the great one-shot singles. Originally recorded in Britain in 1965 by The Little Darlings, and slightly later by The Ivy League. To hold me-e (bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-di oooo-o-oh) To kiss me-e (bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-di oooo-o-oh) To thrill me-e (bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-di oooo-o-oh) #18) The Paradons: "Diamonds And Pearls" (1960) [18] Woo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo Woo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo Woo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo Woo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo Woo-hoo Woo-hoo Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo #19) The Rock-A-Teens: "Woo-Hoo" (1959) [16] One of the shortest lyrics of any vocal Top 20 record. Girl, don't say no Don't use that word I'll make believe That I, I never heard #20) The Shadows of Knight: "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" (1966) [90] Treat me right, must you run now For the night's just begun now #21) Dusty Springfield: "Stay Awhile" (1964) [38] The touch of your lips next to mine Gets me excited, makes me feel fine I've got it bad, but that's all right Long as you're near me every night #22) The Uniques: "All These Things" (1966,1970) [97,112] The GenaTeam: Joe Stampley was a member of the Uniques but didn't get a credit on this song. Me: However, Stampley later re-recorded the song as a C&W solo act -- not once, but twice. My thanks to Joe Gillis for turning me on to this particular version in a newsgroup post (rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s, January 31 2001). Do the jerk, baby Do the jerk now Hey! Put on your red dress And then you go downtown, now #23) Jr. Walker & The All Stars: "Shotgun" (1965) [4] See that girl who's smiling so brightly Well I reckon she's cool and I reckon rightly #24) The Who: "Call Me Lightning" (1968) [40] It was pointed out to me that this song was ineligible, since it had been used as late as GOLQ131. By this time it was too late to substitute another song -- and I had already done one substi- tution -- so I decided to give everyone full points for it (cf. GOLQ158, songs #04 and #17). Somewhat mysteriously, a number of entrants entered "Magic Bus", a Who song with dissimilar lyrics. I see that far-away look in your eyes I know you're thinking of someone else And when I talk to you, I realize I might as well be talking to myself #25) Jackie Wilson: "I've Lost You" (1967) [82] My tribute to Andrew Rogers, who tirelessly championed Wilson. Tie-breakers: You're gonna put the blame on me, you've got a lot of nerve You say you feel so lonely, well it's just what you deserve You'll get tired of your lonely life in high society And get some kicks and take a trip and come on down to me #T1) The Changin' Times: "How Is The Air Up There?" (1966) [-] 8-Track Minds: Changin' Times was (were?) Steve Duboff and Artie Kornfeld. They later wrote "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" for The Cowsills. Kornfeld also co-wrote "Dead Man's Curve" and was one of the organizers of the original Woodstock. Me: In the world of sarcastic mid-sixties garage songs about high society girls, this must rank as one of the all-time classics. It is perhaps better known today in a cover version by the La-De-Da's, a New Zealand band; their version is on the recently released (and highly recommended) "Pebbles II" box set. Don't try to figure out Where I come from Now don't try to figure out Where I come from I could be a smart guy from Wall Street I could be the Purple People Eater's son #T2) The "5" Royales: "The Slummer The Slum" (1958) [-] ________________________________________________________________________ This chart ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized, except for the song on which I gave everyone full credit. The second number on the line denotes the avg. no. of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 1 decimal place). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Rank Avg.
