RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #220 (GOLQ220)

Congratulations to The Genateam, Randy Price & Peter Morley, and The Village
Idiots, who had perfect scores and share first place on this very hard quiz.
The Delphi Trivia Club came in fourth by a few points, and James White was
the top individual entrant.

GOLQ220's mean score was a relatively low 358.6. In a strangely bimodal quiz,
no entry came within 40 points of this average.

Check out the solution to The Puzzler and the names of those entrants who
solved it in the section following the main quiz.

My thanks to all those who participated. Regina Litman will be posting
GOLQ221 within a week or so.

A big lump came into my throat
And my eyes watered like I had a bad old cold
#19) Sovine, Red: "Giddyup Go" (1966) [82] {-}

PUZZLER SOLUTION
----------------

Congratulations to the entrants who solved "The Act You've Known For All
These Years": The Delphi Trivia Club, The EJ'S & Co., EMC and Friends,
The Genateam, NAVAIRHEADS, Sanford Stein, Team Teitelbaum, The Village
Idiots, and Will McCorry.

The quote:

According to George Martin, "Sgt. Pepper" was incredible because
it took on its own character: "It was a complete change of life,
a very long and arduous series of recordings, and I suppose that
looking back on it, it would never have been formed in exactly
that way if the boys hadn't got into the drug scene, and if I
hadn't been a normal person - I don't think it would have been as
coherent; you can't do much with a guy when he's giggling all
     the time."

The diagram's fourth column contains the scrambled letters of
"Pet Sounds," the musically inventive Beach Boys album which Paul
felt was the "album of all time," and which still remains one of
his favorites. And the twelfth column contains the scrambled
letters of "Henry," that famed performing terpsichorean equine.
One of the completed answers' columns spells out "Mahatma Gandhi,"
whose likeness was painted out of the album cover crowd scene -
EMI had had its fill of controversy after the hubbub caused by
John's "more popular than Jesus" statement. Hitler and Jesus
were vetoed as crowd members even before the photograph was taken.

Clue Answers:
-------------

A. One of the two singers pictured on "Sgt. Pepper"'s front cover (other
than the Fab Four) who charted pop singles in the U.S.

DION is in the crowd (as is Bob Dylan).

B. She at first refused the request to be pictured on a lonely hearts club
band album cover, but relented after a personal letter from The Beatles

Beatles manager Brian Epstein, fearing lawsuits, attempted to get
permission from people to have their likenesses appear on the album
cover. MAE WEST's original response was "What would I be doing in
    a lonely hearts club?"

C. Kind of flower used to create the album cover's floral guitar

The floral display delivery boy asked cover art designer Peter Blake
if he could contribute by creating a yellow HYACINTH guitar.

D. "He didn't notice that the ______ had changed"

The "lucky man" who "blew his mind out in a car" didn't notice that
the LIGHTS had changed. ("A Day In The Life")

E. Only fruit (other than Pepper!) mentioned in the album's lyrics

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river with TANGERINE trees and
marmalade skies" is the starting line from "Lucy In The Sky With
Diamonds." The title's LSD initials are coincidental, as John took the
title from a picture drawn by his four-year-old son Julian. It was
a picture of a classmate Lucy's face in front of exploding stars.

F. Final three words sung before the orchestral crescendo intended by John
to rise up to "a sound like the end of the world"

"I'd love to TURN YOU ON" is sung by John before the apocalyptic string
climax based on abstract ideas Paul got from German composer Karlheinz
Stockhausen and others. Paul thought these final album lyrics were
as risque as they could get away with at that time; the BBC banned
"A Day In The Life" anyway.

G. Instrument held by Ringo on the album's front cover

John holds a French horn, Paul an English horn, George a flute, and
    Ringo a TRUMPET.

H. Potentially the holiest place in England?!

"Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire ... Now they know how
many holes it takes to fill the ALBERT HALL." These (and the above)
"A Day In The Life" lyrics are the result of John's having read a
newspaper story about a Guinness heir dying in a car crash. John then
inspected the next page and found a story about 4,000 potholes in
    Blackburn, Lancashire that needed filling.

I. "She goes downstairs to the kitchen _________ her handkerchief"

"She's Leaving Home" depicts a runaway girl, based on a story Paul read
in the Daily Mirror. In the song, the girl runs off CLUTCHING her
    handkerchief.

J. A popular resort isle in the English Channel

"When I'm Sixty-Four" - whose tune was written by Paul at age 15 or
16 - includes the lyrics "Every summer we can rent a cottage in the
Isle of WIGHT if it's not too dear."

K. A relative of Vera and Chuck

"Grandchildren on your knee - Vera, Chuck, and DAVE." ("When I'm
    Sixty-Four")

L. "All summer long we spent groovin' _________ \ Everybody kept on
playin' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Johnny Rivers' "Summer Rain" was a #14 hit in 1967/68 on the heels
of - and an ode to - 1967's "Summer of Love" in the U.S. In the song,
he and his love spend the summer groovin' IN THE SAND. And as in real
life, the music of "Sgt. Pepper" (released June 2nd) was ubiquitous.

M. Maker of Ringo's drum kit

The Black Oyster Pearl LUDWIG Super Classic drum set whose bass drumhead
bears the Beatles and Ludwig insignias is possibly the most recognized
    drum kit in the world.

N. Item pictured on the album's front cover next to a tuba

Below waxwork models of the Beatles (on loan from Madame Tussauds in
London) and behind a small Japanese stone figure stands a HOOKAH.

O. Where the Hendersons will dance and sing on Saturday

"The celebrated Mr. K. performs his feat on Saturday at BISHOPSGATE \
The Hendersons will dance and sing as Mr. Kite flies through the ring."
The song "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" came about as a result
of John's purchase of an old poster in an antique shop. The lyrics
come almost directly from that poster. John scoffed at the rumor that
    Henry the Horse meant heroin.

P. One of the two singers to cover a song from "Sgt. Pepper" and have it
chart as a top 100 pop single in the U.S.

In 1967, David & Jonathan covered "She's Leaving Home," but it only
reached #123. In 1974/75, Elton John (with the "reggae guitars of
Dr. Winston O'Boogie," a/k/a John Lennon) hit #1 with his version of
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds." But the first "Sgt. Pepper" song
cover to hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. was JOE COCKER's
"With A Little Help From My Friends." It reached #68 in 1968 in the
U.S. and #1 in the U.K. (A version by Wet Wet Wet in 1988 also went
    to #1 in the U.K.)

Some parting comments on "Sgt. Pepper":

David Crosby: "I would've thought 'Sgt. Pepper' could've stopped the
[Vietnam] War just by putting too many good vibes in the air."

Abbie Hoffman: "Hearing 'Sgt. Pepper,' smoking reefers, and planning the
revolution in my friend's loft, we were just overwhelmed by their vision."

Michelle Phillips: "That record, played over and over again ... was the
theme of the people working for the [Monterey Pop] Festival."

John Sebastian: "It was like throwing down a hat in the center of a
ring ... it seemed like an almost insurmountable task to come up with
anything even in the same ballpark."

Bob Dylan (reportedly, when played the album for the first time): "Turn
that off!"

Much of the information used in this Puzzler was taken from the delightful
book "Beatlesongs" by William J. Dowlding. It is a font of Beatles song
creation and album production trivia.

We hope you have enjoyed the show ... we're sorry but it's time to go!!

So to quote John Lennon's coy interjection between "two" and "three" in the
introductory count-in to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)":

                             "Bye!"
