RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #247 (GOLQ247)

Four teams tied for first with outstanding performances, each missing only the
first tie-breaker (which no one solved). Congratulations to The Delphi Trivia
Club, The Gypsy's Caravan, Randy Price & Peter Morley, and The Village Idiots!

Just off the pace, missing one regular song, was The GenaTeam. Also, strong
performances (scoring at least 400 points) by The EJ's & Co., Across the
Boarder, and Really Rockin' In Boston.

The obligatory boring stats: Median score was 400, and mean was 372.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! GOLQ #248, by Tom Pillion and
Rick Falkenstein, has already been posted.

_____________________________________________________________________________

After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers:
    +  indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly.
    -  indicates partial credit.
    x indicates a totally incorrect guess.
    .  indicates no guess.

        "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart
        "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart

        "xxx",...,"yyy" = number(s) of previous GOLQ appearances (if any)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My girl started in to laugh
When I sawed that see-saw right in half
Then I knew she was really mine
Ever since the time
#01) The Ames Brothers: "I Saw Esau" (1956/57) [51] {-}

    [Song is based on a tongue-twister nursery rhyme ("I saw Esau sitting on a
    see-saw ...".]

We'll walk hand in hand
We'll walk hand in hand
We'll walk hand in hand, some day
#02) Joan Baez: "We Shall Overcome" (1963) [90] {-}

    [The song is rooted in several church hymns of the 1800s; accounts vary.
    It evolved into its current form during the late '40s thru late '50s via a
    number of contributors, among them Pete Seeger (who is credited with adding
    the verse used here). It became most closely associated with Joan Baez
    after she performed it at many civil rights rallies in the early/mid-'60s.]

I feel so good
And that's a real good sign
#03) Hank Ballard and The Midnighters: "Finger Poppin' Time" (1960) [7] {2} <52>

I can't stand this playin' around
Help me up, don't let me down
Kiss me baby, tell me so
If you love me, let me know
#04) Brook Benton: "Kiddio" (1960) [7] {1} <36>

    [The Gypsy's Caravan noted: "Introduced by Teddy Randazzo in Mr. Rock and
    Roll ...(Alan Freed's worst movie!!)".]

Well, it's a feeling you can't explain
People, it'll put you in a pain
It'll make you so you can't stand still
Baby, do you get this feeling?
#05) The Capitols: "We Got A Thing That's In The Groove" (1966) [65] {26}

Why lead me through a life of misery
When you don't care a bag of beans for me?
#06) Ray Charles and His Orchestra: "Unchain My Heart" (1961/62) [9] {1}

    [Backing vocals by the ubiquitous Raeletts.]

At the door, there's a man who will greet you
Then you go downstairs to some tables and chairs
Soon, I'm sure, you'll be tapping your feet
Because the beat is the greatest there
#07) Petula Clark: "I Know A Place" (1965) [3] {-} <41>

Mama told me, Papa did too
"Some of these women gonna be the death of you
You better find out which one you crave
Son, some of these women'll take you to your grave"
#08) Dr. Feelgood and The Interns: "Right String But The Wrong Yo-Yo"
        (1962) [84] {-}

    [This group centered around pianist/vocalist Willie "Piano Red" Perryman.
    Piano Red had himself recorded a hit version of this song in 1951 (which
    reached #10 on the R&B chart), as "The Wrong Yo Yo".]

Oh, the boardwalk's deserted
There's nobody down by the shore
And the Ferris wheel ride
Isn't turning around anymore
#09) The Drifters: "I've Got Sand In My Shoes" (1964) [33] {n/c} <58>

You'll never know
That I still love you so
Though the heartaches remain
#10) The Everly Brothers: "Crying In The Rain" (1962) [6] {-} <74>

    [Written by an unusual pairing of Brill Building songwriters: Carole King
    (who usually wrote with then-husband Gerry Goffin) and Howard Greenfield
    (whose usual writing partner was Neil Sedaka).]

They think that I'm a rover
But my rovin' days are over
Someday your folks will welcome me
#11) The 4 Seasons Featuring the "sound" of Frankie Valli: "Big Man In Town"
        (1964) [20] {n/c} <93>

I remember it all very well, looking back
It was the summer I turned eighteen
We lived in a one-room run-down shack
On the outskirts of New Orleans
#12) Bobbie Gentry: "Fancy" (1969/70) [31] {-}

How am I doing?
You really want to know?
Oh, I guess I'm doing fine
It's been so long now
But it seems like it was only yesterday
#13) Joe Hinton: "Funny" (1964) [13] {n/c}

    [Version by Jimmy Elledge was used in GOLQ #71. Written by Willie Nelson.
    Most other versions give the title as "Funny How Time Slips Away."]

What are you gonna say to your friends
When the talk around town begins?
Will you tell them how you treated me bad?
Will you tell them how you made me so sad?
#14) Brenda Holloway: "When I'm Gone" (1965) [25] {12} <97>

    [I've always been stumped as to why she never became a superstar - a
    gorgeous woman, a superb voice, and a talented songwriter to boot.]

Back on the farm or in the city
In any old town, they sure are pretty
Doin' a dance or bakin' a cake
Ridin' or walkin', they're simply great
#15) J. J. Jackson: "I Dig Girls" (1966) [83] {19}

Tables turned and here you are a-beggin' me
To take you back, you got me feelin' sad and blue
I feel so bad I wanna cry
I ain't gonna tell you no lie
#16) Marv Johnson: "(You've Got To) Move Two Mountains" (1960) [20] {12} <45>

I'm trying hard not to let myself go
Work out, everything is all right
The way you move you're just out of sight
#17) Major Lance: "Hey Little Girl" (1963) [13] {12} <64>

You are with somebody new
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'm still in love with you
#18) Little Anthony and The Imperials: "I'm On The Outside (Looking In)"
        (1964) [15] {n/c} <38>

I'm in way over my head
Now she thinks that I love her
Because that's what I said
Though I never think of her
#19) The Mamas & The Papas: "I Saw Her Again" (1966) [5] {-} <26><125>

When I come home from work
With a big smile and feeling gay
Suspiciously, my wife, she says
"Hey, where you been all day?"
#20) Nicola Paone: "Blah, Blah, Blah" (1959) [57] {-}

    [Although Nicola died in 2003, his namesake restaurant in NYC is still
    around. I remember the singing ads he did for the restaurant on local TV
    and radio years ago, although I was unaware of his performing/recording
    career at the time.]

The music of her laughter
Hid my father's words from me
#21) Peter, Paul & Mary: "Lemon Tree" (1962) [35] {-}

    [The 1965 version by Trini Lopez was used in GOLQ #74.]

It's been ten years or maybe more
I never got married and that's for sure
You broke my heart and now I know
I've been a fool for you so here I go
#22) Lloyd Price: "Where Were You (On Our Wedding Day)?" (1959) [23] {4} <93>

You'll find this dance is so cool to do
Come on, baby, gonna teach it to you
#23) Dee Dee Sharp: "Mashed Potato Time" (1962) [2] {1} <1>

I can turn a gray sky blue, uh
I can make it rain whenever I want it to
Oh, I can build a castle from a single grain of sand
I can make a ship sail, huh, on dry land
#24) The Temptations: "I Can't Get Next To You" (1969) [1] {1} <101>

    [The group takes turns in the verses - the lines given here are sung by,
    respectively: Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, and Paul
    Williams. The 5th member, Otis Williams, gets a few lines later on in the
    song. Otis, the only surviving member of the group's classic mid-'60s
    quintet, still tours with a latter-day Temptations lineup. Dennis Edwards
    (who replaced David Ruffin in 1968) is also still alive and performing.]

Every time you go away
I always say
This time it's goodbye, dear
#25) Dionne Warwick: "Anyone Who Had A Heart" (1963/64) [8] {n/c} <74>

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Well, I oughta go home where I belong
But your power over me is much too strong
You're not the kind that could ever be true
#T1) Orville Couch and The Troublemakers: "Wild Girl" (1964) [-] {n/c}

    [Couch, a country/rockabilly vocalist & guitarist, died in 2002. His
    biggest hit was "Hello Trouble," which peaked at #5 on Billboard's Country
    chart in 1963. "Wild Girl" (b/w "A Midnight Rendezvous" on Action 108)
    didn't chart, and I haven't yet been able to track down a copy. I became
    aware of the song because a DJ some years ago (who went by the on-air name
    of "Wild Girl") used it as her opening theme.

    This song was the one complete stumper on the quiz. For the curious,
    here's a link to a radio show archive containing the song:
    http://wusb.fm/rockandroll/march07.html
    Go to the March 13 show, and download the MP3; "Wild Girl" is at time
    13:35 into the 3-hour show.]

But if you want to play
Stay right back on earth
Waiting for rebirth
#T2) The Moody Blues: "Sun Is Still Shining" (1969/70) [-] {-}

    [From the album "To Our Children's Children's Children" (a fact also noted
    by The GenaTeam), which hit #14 on Billboard's Album chart, and which was
    a staple of "progressive" radio in the early '70s. A classic bit of
    psychedelia.]
