RESULTS AND ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #254

Two teams had perfect scores: RANDY PRICE/PETER MORLEY and ACROSS THE BOARDER.
THE VILLAGE IDIOTS, DELPHI TRIVIA CLUB and COASTERS identified all 25 regular
songs, but missed on one or both of the tie-breakers.

The average score on this quiz was a relatively low 408.

Thanks to all who entered. GOLQ255 will be posted shortly.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #254 ANSWERS:

Answers are in the form:
#number) Artist: "Title" (year[s]) [peak Pop] {peak R&B}

where "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart
      "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

#01) Ray Anthony: "Peter Gunn" (1959) [8] {12}

#02) LaVern Baker: "I Can't Love You Enough" (1956) [22] {7}

#03) Big Brother And the Holding Company: "Down On Me" (1968) [43] {-}

#04) Andrea Carroll: "It Hurts To Be Sixteen" (1963) [45] {-}

     For the week of 7/20/1963, the Chiffons were on the charts twice. Once
     as uncredited backup singers on this song, as also as The Four Pennies
     for #09 below.

#05) Dave Clark Five: "Because" (1964) [3] {-}

     HT: Lead singer & keyboardist Mike Smith died several weeks before the
         group's induction into the R&R HoF. He'd been almost entirely
         paralyzed since a fall in 2003. Sax/harmonica player Denny Payton
         died in Dec. 2006. The remaining 3 members - drummer Dave Clark,
         bassist Rick Huxley, and guitarist Lenny Davidson, were in attendance
         at the ceremony.

#06) Eddie Cooley And the Dimples: "Priscilla" (1956) [20] {-}

#07) Dyke And The Blazers: "We Got More Soul" (1969) [35] {7}

#08) Adam Faith With the Roulettes: "It's Alright" (1965) [31] {-}

#09) Four Pennies: "My Block" (1963) [67] {-}

     See #04 above.

#10) Connie Francis: "Together" (1961) [6] {-}

#11) Happenings: "Goodnight My Love" (1966) [31] {-}

#12) Brian Hyland: "Hung Up In Your Eyes" (1967) [58] {-}

#13) Betty Johnson: "I Dreamed" (1956) [9] {-}

#14) Kinks: "Sunny Afternoon" (1966) [14] {-}

#15) Little Milton: "Who's Cheating Who?" (1965) [43] {4}

#16) Marvelettes: "Don't Mess With Bill" (1966) [7] {3}

#17) Johnny Morisette: "Meet Me At The Twisting Place" (1962) [63] {18}

     Written by Sam Cooke.

#18) Elvis Presley With the Jordanaires: "It Feels So Right" (1965) [55] {-}

#19) Paul Revere And the Raiders Featuring Mark Lindsay:
                                    "Don't Take It So Hard" (1968) [27] {-}

#20) Bobby Rydell: "Wild One" (1960) [2] {10}

#21) Evie Sands: "Any Way That You Want Me" (1969) [53] {-}

     Written by Chip "Wild Thing" Taylor. Evie had very bad luck. She
     recorded his "Angel of the Morning" for Cameo Records in 1967, and in
     its first week, it became the most requested song on the radio across
     the nation. However, Cameo went bankrupt that week and couldn't deliver
     the 45s for sale. Months later, Merrilee Rush released her version.
     This single was caught up in litigation after a promoter stole a test
     recording and had another singer release a competing version.

#22) Steppenwolf: "America" (1969) [39] {-}

#23) Temptations: "Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down" (1969) [20] {2}

#24) Caterina Valente : "The Breeze and I (Andalucia)" (1955) [8] {-}

#25) Billy Williams: "Date With The  Blues" (1957) [-] {-}

     All entrants were given credit for this flip side of I'm Gonna Sit Right
     Down etc. The song is one of a few that, for some reason, are listed in
     Whitburn, but not as a charted single, therefore making it ineligible for
     these quizzes.

------------
Tie-breakers:
------------

#T1) Chants: "I Don't Care" (1963) [-] {-}

     Sorry, a British Invasion recording that never made it across the pond.
     This song does appear on multiple CDs of lesser-known British Invasion
     artists, but it is perhaps a little too obscure for this quiz.

#T2) Buddy Miles/Jimi Hendrix: "Them Changes" (1969) [-] {-}

     This was a live recording from the first set of a New Year's Eve show
     in San Francisco. That arguably makes it the latest and final possible
     GOLQ-eligible recording available, at least as far as U.S. recordings.
     Buddy Miles died just a couple of days before Mike Smith. Credit was
     given to anyone whose answer included one of Buddy, Jimi or Band of
     Gypsies. This song was released multiple times in seemingly multiple
     variations. Buddy was also the lead vocalist for the California Raisins
     Heard It Thru The Grapevine TV commercial.
