RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #268 (GOLQ268)

Congratulations to The Gypsy's Caravan and Really Rockin' In Boston, the
two teams that achieved perfect scores by identifying all 25 songs in
the main part of the quiz, plus both tie breakers. The Village Idiots
and Will McCorry also identified all 25 in the main part of the quiz.
Nice job also to Jessica, who always honors us by entering our quiz and
who amazes me by identifying as many songs as she does, given she was
born after the GOLQ time period ended.

Although the quiz was pretty straightforward, song numbers 14 and T2
generated some pretty interesting discussion. See Tom's notes amplifying
each of those songs.

Median score was 460 and mean was 409.

Thanks to all who entered, especially those who only knew a few, but played
anyway for the fun of it!

That's the time (that's the time)
That's the time (that's the time)
I love the best
#09) Donovan: "Colours" (1965) [61] {-}

  Note: I always liked this somewhat remote song, which I first heard on one
  of Donovon's albums, and considered it one of his simpler but better songs.
  Never realized until recently that it was released as a single. Was covered
  by Joan Baez and a few other folk singers of the 1960's, and Donovan sang
  it with Joan as a duet at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Same night I put
  this into the quiz, thinking it was going to be kind of a stumper, I saw a
  TV commercial using the song! Guess it has more longevity than I realized.

You'd know what a drag it is to see you
#10) Dylan, Bob: "Positively 4th Street" (1965) [7] {-}

I was the one who came running
When you were lonely
I haven't lived one day
Not loving you only
#11) 5th Dimension, The: "Wedding Bell Blues" (1969) [1] {23}

A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

I thought you knew
You were all the world to me
All my dreams come true
#13) Luke, Robin: "Susie Darlin'" (1958) [5] {-}

Jefferson Drum with his restless guns
Hog-tied my baby and the fight was won
#14) Olympics, The: "Western Movies" (1958) [8] {7}

  The actual lyrics on this song are almost impossible to clearly identify.
  I had hoped to find some published sheet music, but was unable. I had an
  interesting dialogue with Mike Weaver, who said:

      What I have always heard for this portion of the song is:

          Jefferson Drum and The Restless Gun
          Untied my baby and the fight was won

  Sorta made sense to me since "The Restless Gun" was a TV show (as was
  "Jefferson Drum") and that seems to be the object of the song. Since both
  characters are heroic, my perception is they would untie rather than tie
  up the lady." I agreed with Mike in concept and went back and listened many
  times to my copy of the song. Although Mike's lyrics do make more sense to
  me than mine, I still believed I heard the lyrics I posted, so I did not
  change them. Bottom line is, if you knew the song, you'd correctly identify
  it using either my or Mike's lyrics, but I would be interested in hearing
  the viewpoint of some others of you, especially if you have access to any
  proof!

Please see what you can do
For me and for my one and only love
#15) Patti Page: "Allegheny Moon" (1956) [2] {-}

Say the words I love you, love you truly
If I heard the words that could make you mine
I would be the luckiest girl alive
#16) Paris Sisters, The: "Be My Boy" (1961) [56] {-}

Please don't be a party pooper, pooper
Please oh please don't be a snooper, snooper
Can't we have a little fun tonight
#17) Poni-Tails, The: "Seven Minutes In Heaven" (1958) [85] {-}

  Note: Less-than-memorable follow-up to their hit, "Born Too Late."

Well they said you was high-classed
Well that was just a lie
#18) Presley, Elvis: "Hound Dog" (1956) [1] {1}

They say you've found somebody new
But that won't stop my loving you
I just can't let you walk away
Forget the love I had for you
Guess I could find somebody, too
But I don't want no one but you
#19) Reynolds, Debbie: "Am I That Easy To Forget" (1960) [25] {-}

  Was a country hit covered by a number of artists.

I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
#20) Righteous Brothers, The: "Unchained Melody" (1965) [4] {6}

  Originally a number one hit in 1955, from the movie, Unchained,"
  performed by Les Baxter in 1955; many covers over the years.

I told you once, I told you twice, and maybe even three times before
That our love could never be

If the night would never pass
And the sun would never rise
Not one moment would we waste
But golly
#24) Wallace, Jerry: "How The Time Flies" (58) [11] {11}

How's the weather?
Whether or not, we're together
Together we'll see it much better
#25) Young Rascals, The: "How Can I Be Sure" (1967) [4] {-}

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

And if I'm well you can tell she's been with me now
She's been with me now
Quite a long long time and I feel fine
#T1) Taylor, James: "Something In The Way She Moves" (1968) [-] {-}

  Note: From Taylor's debut album, on the Apple label. Taylor often sings
  this song at concerts and it appears on his Greatest Hits/Best Of albums,
  as well as on his 2007 live album, "One Man Band". Rumor was that George
  Harrison "borrowed" the title line for his song, "Something."

Yonder come my baby
Dressed in red
She's got a shotgun
Says she's gonna kill me dead
#T2) Van Ronk, Dave: "Cocaine Blues" (1963) [-] {-}

  Classic acoustic guitar blues song from the album, "Folksinger," and a
  personal favorite of Tom. Dave died a few years ago at age 66. He was known
  as the "Mayor of McDougal Street" in Greenwich Village. Many of the up-and-
  coming folk singers of the early '60's cited Dave as a mentor, including Bob
  Dylan.

  Note by Tom: This album was recommended to me back in 1964 as a source for
  learning how to really play great blues guitar. I poured over this song and
  others on the album, and DVR's style was very influential on my own playing
  (I can still play a pretty accurate version of this song, though I can't
  begin to imitate DVR's vocals). Dave had his own style of singing that was
  hard to duplicate...kind of a cross between Joe Cocker and Ray Charles.
  Cocaine Blues was written many years earlier, some say Luke Jordan, but
  others say Luke's version is different; Dave likely learned it from Rev.
  Gary Davis, another great acoustic blues guitarist who DVR credits as
  influencing him. Dylan has a similar version that he either learned from DVR
  or Davis. Dylan's version has slightly different lyrics from the ones above,
  and Dylan was already used in the main part of the quiz, so Dylan is
  incorrect as an artist for #T2. Likewise, some folks named Hank Thompson
  and Johnny Cash as the artist, but the Thompson and Cash "Cocaine Blues"
  is an altogether different song that bears no resemblance to the DVR version
  above. Keith Richards, Jackson Browne, and others have also performed cover
  versions of the song.

The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes,
tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
