Subject: CORRECTION(S) to Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz 287 (GOLQ287)

Following some feedback and in-depth discussion among the GOLQ founders, quiz-
masters, and veterans, NAVAIRHEADS have rescored the GOLQ, giving full credit
to all who correctly identified "Mary Lou" with the artist listed as Ronnie
Hawkins, regardless of whether his accompanying group, "The Hawks," was also
included. Rationale is that the GOLQ USED list, to which many teams refer as
a source document, listed Ronnie Hawkins, without "the Hawks," in a previous
GOLQ as the artist of "Mary Lou." So, to update our opening paragraph and
recalibrate our scores . . .

RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #287 (GOLQ287)

We trust you all had a "Mary" Christmas, since almost every team appeared
to have easily identified our GOLQ theme for this month: every song had the
word "Mary" included in either the title, the lyrics, or the artist. Also,
it appears the NAVAIRHEADS provided a Christmas gift by creating a quiz that
yielded a mean score of 448, and a whopping median score of 500! Ten of the
fifteen teams correctly identified all 25 of the songs in the main part of
the quiz. First place, however, goes to Really Rockin' In Boston alone,
since they were the only team to correctly identify both tie breakers and
the artists, followed by a six-way tie for second place and a three-way tie
for eighth place.

Our hats are also off to Virve, Jessica and Matt, who we love to have play,
even though they were born long after the GOLQ era ended. That you recognize
ANY of the songs is a tribute to you, as well as to the songs of our GOLQ era.

Happy New Year to all. Mick Tursky has already posted GOLQ288.

#T1) Ian & Sylvia: "Mary Anne" (1962) [-] {-}

From their debut album, "Ian & Sylvia." Many teams identified this
folk song, but they only received partial credit because they named
artists whose lyrics were slightly different from Ian & Sylvia's
version. Only Really Rockin' In Boston correctly identified the artist.

Nancy was charming and had poise and grace
I'll always remember my dear Nancy's face
And her warm embrace
#T2) Smothers Brothers, The: "Mary Was Pretty" (1963) [-] {-}

From the album, "Think Ethnic." Although we believe this to be the only
released version of this song, we gave full credit to teams who identified
the artist as the Kingston Trio, since they (specifically Nick Reynolds)
recorded the song for their Going Places album. The song did not make the
final cut of the Going Places album, but was later included in a Kingston
Trio compilation of songs from the Dave Guard era.

Tom note: In spite of the fact that the theme was pretty much
a "Christmas present," we were still surprised at the number of
teams that were able to identify stumpers like, "Little Mary;"
"Mary Ann Thomas;" and "Mary Don't You Weep."
