RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #306 (GOLQ306)
Congratulations to Lehigh Valley Pa. Trivia Gang, The EJ'S & Co., Delphi Trivia
Club, the Village Idiots, and Vito and the Salutations, who took first place in
this quiz with perfect scores of 500++. Will McCorry, with a score of 500..,
was closely behind.
The distribution of the tie-breaking scores was interesting. The five entries
that scored 500++ represented all but one of the entries that identified either
of the tie-breakers. The only other entry that got credit for identifying tie-
breakers also identified both of them. For T2, I had one particular artist in
mind, but I knew of two other alphabetically-qualifying reasonably well-known
artists who did this song (one of them in the very early 1970s but still close
enough). Four of the six entries, all with 500++ scores, named only this
particular artist. One entry, which happened to be the one that didn't score
500++, named one of the other two artists (the one who did the early 1970s
version). The other entry gave all three artists that I had in mind for T2.
There was no theme for this quiz, but there did turn out to be a lot of names
in the song titles and lyrics.
GOLQ306's mean score was 411.69, and the median was 455. The scores tended to
be high because a lot of the songs peaked fairly high on the Billboard charts
and thus were fairly recognizable. There were 7 that peaked at #1, another
that peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the r&b chart, and 10 more that
peaked in the Top 10. Only one of the 25 songs in the regular part of this
GOLQ peaked below #40.

The Bachelors were from Ireland and had a few hits in the U.S. in the wake
of the British Invasion. I guess their promoters and record company figured
we wouldn't know the difference. I enjoyed both this song and another of
their hits, "Marie." I believe my mother told me that "Marie" was an old
song during the time it was a hit. In the 1990s, I learned that that one
was written by Irving Berlin. I found out that "Diane" was also an old song,
dating back to, I think, 1928, even more recently.

#03) Barry & the Tamerlanes: I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight (1963) [21] {-}
Barry is Barry DeVorzon, who became known as a famous composer and arranger
in the 1970s.

After I decided to use these two songs with just about the same title by
alphabetically-close artists, I discovered that they also appeared back-to-
back in GOLQ030.

#05) Coasters, The: Yakety Yak (1958) [1] {1}
Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. I chose this song as a tribute to
my usual GOLQ team, The Coasters. If you look hard enough in this quiz,
you'll see the names of the current Coasters team members and one former
one, although a "c" and "k" got swapped along the way.

#06) DeShannon, Jackie: What The World Needs Now Is Love (1965) [7] {40}
Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This song was chosen but didn't
make the final cut for previous GOLQs that I did, including the one that
honored Bacharach & David plus six other songwriting teams. Jackie DeShannon
is also a noted songwriter. One of her songwriting successes was the 1980s
hit, written in 1974, "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes. Later in this GOLQ
is a theme song from a Bette Davis movie.

Written by Bob Dylan. This was a comeback hit for Rick Nelson, who had not
made the Hot 100 in close to five years at the time. He had a few more chart
entries in the early 1970s, the biggest of which was "Garden Party," which
went to #8 in 1972. While Rick is often thought of as a nickname for Richard,
I have known or known of Ricks whose real names were Frederick, Patrick, and
Eric, which was Rick Nelson's real first name. Contemporary record producer
Rick Rubin's real first name is Frederick.

Patti Page had not had a Top 10 hit in seven years when she charted with
this song from the movie of the same name, starring Bette Davis. This was
her last Top 10 entry, but she had a handful of lower-charting songs over
the next few years.

Yes, I chose this song because someone named Phillip Phillips won one of
those reality talent shows I don't watch. The real name of guy who sang
this song is John Phillip Baptiste.
Jessica Raine: Not the Phil Phillips who won American Idol this year,
although if he were a little less of a Dave Matthews clone he'd probably
try to cover this one at some point.

#18) Reynolds, Debbie: Tammy (1957) [1] {-}
This was still making its way to #1 in the summer of 1957, 55 years ago.
From the movie TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR, in which she starred. As I noted in
the last GOLQ I did, she is still making movies. But in the movie in which
I saw her earlier this year, ONE FOR THE MONEY, she played a grandmother!
My how time flies!

#19) Roe, Tommy: Sheila (1962) [1] {6}
And this one was still making its way to #1 in the summer of 1962, 50 years
ago. This song and "Sherry" by the Four Seasons were back-to-back #1's in
September 1962. I wonder if there are any sets of twin girls about to turn
50 who were named Sheila and Sherry by parents who were inspired by these
two songs.
I chose this song because (I'm about to reveal a big secret) my middle name
is Sheila, and this has been somewhat of a theme song for me. I didn't think
of the tie-breaker song with Regina in the lyrics until fairly late in the
game, so I had chosen this song to represent me in the Coasters team tribute.
But I kept it in anyway.
Tommy Roe is from Atlanta, and I learned recently that there was another
Sheila song by an Atlanta-area artist, "She Sheila" by the Producers,
a 1980s song.

#20) Ryder, Mitch, and the Detroit Wheels: Break Out (1966) [62] {-}
This is a song I had heard of but never heard until the 1990s. Mitch Ryder
and the Detroit Wheels had had two hit records in the late 1965/early 1966
time period in the Washington, DC, area--"Jenny Take A Ride!" and "Little
Latin Lupe Lu." I saw their next single, "Break Out," in record stores,
but I never heard it on the radio. The next song by them that came to my
attention was one that I did hear on the radio--"Devil With A Blue Dress On
& Good Golly Miss Molly." I think "Break Out" is such a great, infectious
rocker, and I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. Perhaps the lyrics were
too revolutionary. And I also learned many years after the fact that this
group had another charting single (#100 for one week) in 1966 that I never
got to hear on the radio, "Takin' All I Can Get."

It had been so hot in the early part of this summer that I wanted to
include at least one song about summer in this GOLQ.

#22) Stevens, Ray: Mr. Businessman (1968) [28] {-}
Ray Stevens had almost a split personality in his hit songs. He did comedy
songs such as "Ahab, The Arab" (no doubt considered to be politically
incorrect these days), "Gitarzan," and, from the 1970s, "The Streak."
But he also did serious, social commentary songs, including what I consider
to be his 1968 trilogy of "anti-rat race" songs. This was the middle of
those three songs, in between "Unwind" and "The Great Escape," and it was
also the biggest hit of the three. In fact, "The Great Escape" only "bubbled
under" at #114.
The recordings of "Mr. Businessman" that show up on CDs are re-recordings

Since I just passed a big number birthday, I thought I'd put a birthday song
in this GOLQ. Ironically, if you listen carefully to the lyrics of this song,
you will realize that it is not really a happy birthday song. But it still
gets requested on radio shows to wish someone a happy birthday.
This song was also recorded by Bobby Vee, who fits alphabetically, but he
never charted with it.

I bought 12 cassettes released in a series called NUGGETS in the 1980s.
Most of the songs on these cassettes were big hits in the late 1960s,
but some of them were new to me. This was one that I hadn't heard before.
When I thought about it recently, I decided to use it as a tie-breaker in
this GOLQ. I figured that some of the participants may have also had this
album in the NUGGETS series. (Rhino has used the word "nuggets" for several
series of reissue albums over the years.)

Vito & the Salutations: The first LP release was credited to Gene Clark
(with the Gosdin Brothers). The CD reissue was just credited to Gene Clark.
Mike Weaver: It's too bad that Regina records (a mid-60's venture) did not
have anything well known enough to even use as tiebreakers. Unfortunately,
any label that would list "Gary & The Wambats" as an artist probably wasn't

Rick Schubert of the Coasters also sent me some information on Regina songs

"Oh no," you must be thinking, "once I got to Mark Dinning after Jackie
DeShannon, I thought we were safe from Neil Diamond this time around. But
she snuck him into this quiz after all!" That's right. This is the 40th
anniversary year of the recording of his famous live album HOT AUGUST NIGHT,
which includes a live version of this song. His first released recording of
this song was on his 1969 album, BROTHER LOVE'S TRAVELING SALVATION SHOW,
later re-released as BROTHER LOVE'S TRAVELING SALVATION SHOW/SWEET CAROLINE.
The Whitburn book lists it as a classic recording by him from 1970. This is
probably because it was released as the B-side of his hit single "Soolaimon"
almost a year after he first released it.
Elvis Presley reportedly recorded this song as part of a deal made in
January 1969. He was about to record in Memphis for the first time in many
years. However, Neil Diamond had already booked time at the American Group
Recording Studio for the week when he wanted to use this studio. In exchange
for getting that week to do his recording, Elvis agreed to record one of
Neil Diamond's newly-written songs, which turned out to be this one. Here's

Mark Lindsay became famous as the lead singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders,

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.
The four songs at the bottom were the ones I expected to do poorly, although
I thought that "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind" would do better than "Echoes,"
instead of ranking the same. The Barry & the Tamerlanes song just above these
four did worse than I expected it to do, especially since I expected the Boyce
and Hart song right after it to jog peoples' memories by having virtually the
same title.
