RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #315 (GOLQ 315)

Congrats to Delphi Trivia Club, EJ's & Co. & Will McCorry for identifying all
the regular songs and #T2. No one got #T1 (more on that later).

Since this was my first outing as QM my goal was to construct the quiz such
that it would not be terribly difficult and thus would encourage participation.
My yardstick for that was to try to keep at least 80% of the regular songs
within the Whitburn top 40 range. I need to get a new yardstick, because
several of you commented that the quiz was difficult.

I knew though that #T1 might be difficult, and in retrospect it probably
as a tad too esoteric. Although it was played regionally, the song was
distributed on a national label (Epic) and shows up in oldies compilations.
Cleveland radio was sometimes a bit quirky in the 60s so it's possible the
song was played nowhere else. If there is a "next time" I will chalk this up
to 'lessons learned'. #T2 seemed to fare OK.

Thanks to everyone who entered.

Mike Weaver

Get out of my seat
#01) Bell, Archie & the Drells: "I Can't Stop Dancing" (1968) [9] {5}

And then a flash from above
Lightning, Lightning
Lightning, Lightning
Just like our love
It was exc-i-i-i-ting
exc-i-i-i-ting
#02) Christie, Lou: "Rhapsody In The Rain" (1966) [16] {-}

Well I looked at my watch and it was ten-o-five
And man I didn't know if I was dead or alive
#03) Clark, Dave, Five: "Reelin' And Rockin'" (1965) [25] {-}

  Team Teitelbaum: "Chuck Berry's original was the B-side of "Sweet Little
  Sixteen" in 1958. Unlike Chuck, the DC5 had a little trouble keeping events
  in sequence; they flipped a couple of verses, so the last 4 times they
  mention are 9:54, 10:26, 10:05, and 10:29."

  I noticed this as well, but thought the chronological anomaly may be an effect
  of the DC5s close proximity to the GMT line. After all, in Europe they even
  write the dates backwards (Day first).

Someone's radio
Has the news tuned in
But nobody cares what he's saying
#04) Cyrkle, The: "It's A Turn-Down Day" (1966) [16] {-}

I can't wheel, I can't deal
Since you walked out on me, yeah
Holy smoke, what you doin' to me, yeah
#05) Dorsey, Lee: "Holy Cow" (1966) [23] {10}

About as cute as she could be
#06) Four Preps, The: "Down By The Station" (1959) [13] {-}

And he's holding her so tight
Wish I had the nerve to cut right in and stop it

Cleopatra sailing down the Nile with Marc
Was huggin' and kissin' and happy as a lark
But suddenly she ran her fingers through his hair
Stopped and said "well I declare"
#08) Grant, Janie: "That Greasy Kid Stuff" (1962) [74] {-}

  The title is in obvious reference to the Vitalis ad campaign against rival
  Brylcreem ("A little dab'll do ya"). I must report that as a lad, I used
  both products as well as Hai Karate after shave. Despite following the
  instructions implicitly, I never found myself defending my virtue from
  hordes of young girls. I should have reported the makers to the FTC.

I got a gal and she sure looks classy
Smooth as a car with a fiberglass chassis
Spicy as a magazine and twice as sassy
#09) Helms, Bobby: "Jacqueline" (1958) [63] {-}

I only met you just a couple of days ago
I only met you and I want your loving so
#10) Hyland, Brian: "Ginny Come Lately" (1962) [21] {-}

But if you find the right boy to marry
Life can be a bowl of cherries
#11) Ikettes, The: "Peaches 'N' Cream" (1965) [36] {28}

We've been goin' steady for such a long time
And up until now everything was just fine
You say you still love me, but it's not the same
It's so plain to see that you're playing a game
#12) Jan & Dean: "You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy" (1965) [27] {-}

He's might handy
With a gun and a knife
#13) King, Claude: "Wolverton Mountain" (1962) [6] {-}

  As most of this group probably knows, Clifton Clowers was an actual person
  who lived in "Woolverton" Mountain Arkansas. I could find no commentary on
  his actual prowess with firearms or sharp instruments or even IF he had a
  daughter. Clifton Clowers died in 1994. Claude King also recently passed
  away. An "answer song" version was released by Jo Ann Campbell: "I'm The
  Girl From Wolverton Mountain"

I got holes in both of my shoes
Well I'm a walkin' case of the blues
Saw a dollar yesterday
But the wind blew it away
#14) Martin, Dean: "Houston" (1965) [21] {-}

Once I meant the world to her
She used to hold me close to her
Then she went and said goodbye
She couldn't care now if I live or die
#15) Martin, Trade: "That Stranger Used To Be My Girl" (1962) [28] {-}

I'm just about
At the end of my rope
But I can't stop trying
I can't give up hope
#16) Miracles, The: "Ooo Baby Baby" (1965) [16] {4}

  Founding member Bobby Rogers passed away as I was putting this quiz together.

Oh the fishes will laugh as they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they'll be smilin'
And the rocks on the sand will proudly stand
#17) Peter, Paul & Mary: "When The Ship Comes In" (1965) [91] {-}

When your kisses start to getting good
That's when you end it
When you know how much on you my dear
My love depended
#18) Ray, James: "Itty Bitty Pieces" (1962) [41]

Did you ever mean those sweet things
Ah, that you used to say
Did you mean .em baby
Of a house with a lovely, lovely garden
And a little baby someday
#19) Ruffin, David: "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)"
                                                               (1969) [9] {2}

All right, I warned ya now
(woooosh)
Oh me, if gramma hadn't run me so bad,
I wouldn't be so outta air.
#20) Sam The Sham & the Pharaohs: "The Hair On My Chinny Chin Chin"
                                                              (1966) [22] {-}

And what about your dad
Did you think of what he'll say
Will he be understanding
Or does he think in the usual way
#21) Taylor, Bobby, & The Vancouvers: "Does Your Mama Know About Me"
                                                              (1968) [29] {5}

  Co-written by Tommy Chong of "Cheech and Chong". My son was doing some
  security work at a venue where Tommy was working (solo) so I asked him to
  ask Tommy if there was a story behind the song. His response was "Oh man,
  I don't remember much about those days". I don't know if he was kidding,
  but I suspect not.

Your lips are my lips
My heart is your heart
Never let us be further than
Just a breath apart
#22) Tillotson, Johnny: "I Rise, I Fall" (1964) [36] {-}

Sometimes we stand on the top of a hill
And We Gaze at the earth and the sky
I turn to you and you melt in my arms
There we are darling, only you and I
#23) Tymes, The: "Wonderful! Wonderful!" (1963) [7] {23}

She used to hold me close at the picture show
That was when she really, really loved me so
Then he came along
Like the stormy sea
#24) Uniques, The, featuring Joe Stampley: "Not Too Long Ago"(1965) [66] {-}

You pretended to be mine
How could you be so unkind
With all the other girls
You played
#25) Washington, Baby: "That's How Heartaches Are Made" (1963) [40] {10}

  A version of this song by the Marvelettes dredged along the bottom of the
  Whitburn chart in 1969. IMHO it was far inferior to Ms. Washington's; it
  does not appear to have even made the R&B chart so perhaps this supports
  my view.

On my last birthday oh-oooh-oh
He said this is my heart oh-oooh-ohe
And while you wear it oh-oooh-oh
We'll never be ap-a-a-art
Though someday he may give me rubies
And a diamond ring
#T1) Andrea Carroll: "The Charm On My Arm" (1961) ) [-] {-}

  I knew that if I ever created a quiz I wanted to include a song by
  Cleveland's 1960's sweetheart, Andrea Carrol. It turns out, I probably
  could have selected a better one. Her only Top 100 song was "It Hurts To Be
  Sixteen", but locally her songs got a lot of air play. Her recording of
  "Please Don't Talk To The Lifeguard" preceded Diane Ray's by two years and
  in my (somewhat biased) opinion is the better version of the two. Andrea has
  gone on to be successful in various show business arenas. If you are
  interesed in a brief "where-is-she-now" article go to:
  http://cbenjamin.wordpress.com/2008/03/08/andrea-carroll-pop-princess-to-phd/
  You can hear the song at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MN3z4c3OtM .
  Be warned; the sound quality is not the best.

So please Mr. Mailman
Take away the letter
It's just a sad memory
No Mr. Mailman the sooner I forget her
The better off I'll be
She didn't say "I love you"
Or "I'm thinking of you"
#T2) Nelson, Rick: "That's All She Wrote" (1963) ) [-] {-}

  This is the flip side of "For You" and for me this is the superior of the
  two sides. I used to have this 45 and rarely played the "hit" side. Sadly I
  no longer have the record because our cat liked the record too--and pushed
  it off a table. We don't have the cat anymore either! (Don't call the ASPCA;
  this was quite a while ago)

=============================================================================

This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second
number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song
(total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For
comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.

I would not have thought that "Holy Cow" would be more recognizable than
"You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy" and "I Rise, I Fall"!
