RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #363 (GOLQ363)

Hello, Wie Gehts, Bon Jour etc.,

Congratulations are in order for tied first place performances of
4 State Trivia and Vito & The Salutations. The latter team
advised that they had multilingual members, so that may have worked
in their favor.

Honorable mention must be given to the EJs for being the only team
to identify T2.

The intended theme was foreign words/foreign locations in lyrics or title.
Everyone picked up on that.

As an experiment, I have created a Youtube playlist of all 27 songs.
Go to: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMZ2lthAs1JlgmEa0T_ODiA and
select the playlist "GOLQ 363". This is my first attempt at putting
a playlist together and my Youtube skills are lacking; for reasons I can't
explain #6 is out of sequence (last). I apologize in advance for any
ads, bad versions, etc.

Thanks to all who entered.

Mike Weaver

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #363 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

#03) Berry, Chuck: "You Never Can Tell" (1964) [14] {n/c} <23><86><309>

Chuck passed away as this quiz was being prepared in March, so this
was included as homage. It turned out that it fit the theme as well.
There is supposed to be an album release of all new material by Chuck
sometime in June. It will be an interesting listen, I think.

#06) Coasters, The: "Little Egypt (Ying-Yang)" (1961) [23] {16} <52><158><321>

A sharp-eared GOLQer advised that this snippet was not taken
from the original version. Several others agreed. This did not
seem to be a problem with most entrants.

Lolita traded in her 'Sailor' for a cowboy. I believe the
German means: Star(s) of the Prairie. My German is only good
enough to order a beer.

#T1) Escorts, The: "Gaudeamus" (1962) [-] {-}

There are several groups named "Escorts" but this one hailed from Brooklyn,
New York. As far as I know, their closest brush with national success was
a low numbered entry (#119) on the "Cash Box" chart with the
"West Side Story" song "Somewhere". However, my personal favorite is the flip,
"Submarine Race Watching".

I may have taken a bit of "quizmaster's license" with this one, since Latin
is not commonly spoken anywhere with the possible exception of Vatican
City; even then probably only in rituals.

An aside: I had two years of Latin in high school; it was a requirement.
Our teacher was former exotic dancer whom we referred to as "Bubbles."
It was really uncalled for, because she was a nice lady and an
effective teacher. Blame it on the shallowness of youth.

At any rate, Gaudeamus (or Gaudeamus Igitur) is sometimes sung, albeit in a far
more solemn fashion, at university graduations in Europe, perhaps even here in
the US. A version was performed by Mario Lanza in the 1954 movie "The Student
Prince", but it did not contain these lyrics.

According to Wikipedia the snippet and its translation is:

Vivat academia
Vivant professores,
Vivat academia
Vivant professores,
Vivat membrum quodlibet,
Vivat membra quaelibet;
Semper sint in flore!

Long live the university,
Long live the teachers,
Long live the university,
Long live the teachers,
Long live each male student,
Long live each female student;
May they always flourish!

#T2) King Tones, The: "Goodnight Baby" (1969) [1] {-}

Believe it or not, this was a big hit - in Japan. It was released here in the
US on Atco and pops up from time-to-time on doo-wop compilations.

Once again relying on the internet, the translation for the snippet is:

I believe someday your Daddy
Will understand how much I love you
Our love is true, it will never change
So, don't you cry oh my baby
I'll touch your trembling shoulders
And hold you tight won't let you go

I won't even try the phonetic Japanese!
