RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #435 (GOLQ435)

Everyone did "finer 'n froghair" on this quiz. Everyone identified the
"animal" theme. I liked doing this theme so much you may see it again soon.

Sitting in the catbird seat with perfect 500++ scores were Delphi Trivia, the
EJs, Really Rockin' In Boston, Tri-State Trivia, and the Village Idiots. Two
entrants, Barry Silk and Will McCorry soard with the eagles by identifying
every regular song and missed only the tie-breakers.

I have created a playlist of all the songs on the quiz plus some extras at:
youtube.com/watch?v=LrYfQEy7zWc&list=PLOM9kp_8LqiuNj6wL7oRCfbU18zU73Vzh
[If this does not show up as a hyperlink, cut and paste into your browser]

Thanks to everyone that participated. A special shout out goes to
GOLQ emeriti Ron & Nancy Crandall and Barry Silk.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #440 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

#01) Baby Jane & The Rockabyes: "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window" (1963)
       [69] {-} <195><373>

An overly "bluesed-up" version of the 1953 Patti Page hit version. Reminds
me a bit of the "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" version by Bob B. Soxx & The Blue
Jeans from 1962.

He said "Hey, I'd like to make a trade with you
'Cos you see, if I was a lightning bug
I'd search the whole night through"
#02) Benton, Brook: "The Boll Weevil Song" (1961) [2] {2} <79><191><256>

A-look at that train, number 709
A-huffin', a-puffin', arrivin' on time
Who do you think's about to arrive?
The band they call the Dixieland Five
#03) Cannon, Freddy: "Muskrat Ramble" (1961) [54] {-} <84>

Because I have a dark twisted soul, I included "Hamster Love" on the
GOLQ 440 playlist. It was a personal Dr. Demento fave of mine.

To the girl in 'Frisco
To the girls in New York
To the girls of Texarkan'
You gotta understand that,
Baby, I'm your man
#04) Crazy Elephant: "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" (1969) [12] {-} <126><228><288>

It started one night
At a bird bandstand
Crickets was a jumping
With a swinging band
#05) Day, Bobby: "The Bluebird, The Buzzard & The Oriole" (1958/59) [54] {-} <62>

I'm feelin' stronger than a grizzly bear
Soarin' like an eagle flyin' through the air
When I get you in my arms you better beware
I'd go insane, 'cause I can't be tamed
#06) Fabian: "Tiger" (1959) [3] {15} <16><166><267>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-07.mp3
#07) Fendermen, The: "Mule Skinner Blues" (1960) [5] {-} <41><296>

Probably well known fun fact: A mule skinner does not relieve
the poor animal of his epidermis. Instead he/she is a highly
skilled driver of a mule team. They are typically cantankerous
animals.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-08.mp3
#08) Fireballs, The: "Bulldog" (1960) [24] {-} <236>

The Fireballs started as studio musicians at Norman
Petty's Clovis NM studio. Internet lore suggests that
Petty dubbed the Fireballs into some of Buddy Holly's early
work and released it.

Rhythm and Blues was their name
Yeah, Rhythm and Blues was their name
Well, they romped and stomped to the rock 'n' roll
You can't stop them to save your soul
Rhythm and Blues was their name
#09) Haley, Bill, and His Comets: "Two Hound Dogs" (1955) [15] {-} <170><373>

I've made up my mind
I'm tired of wasting all my precious time
You've got to be all mine, all mine
#10) Hendrix, Jimi: "Foxey Lady" (1967/68) [67] {-} <156><311>

On some European and Austrailian releases the spelling is "Foxy" Lady.

Just like as working on a chain gang
You're busting rocks
But now you're grooving on the dance floor, Lord
(come on baby)
Hey now, with a stone fox
#11) Lee, Jackie: "The Duck" (1965/66) [14] {4} <71><378>

Well, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two
Guitar pickers in Nashville
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants
On a Tennessee anthill
#12) Lovin' Spoonful, The: "Nashville Cats" (1966/67) [8] {-} <41><92><168><373>

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
#13) Monkees, The: "Daydream Believer" (1967/68) [1] {-} <65><166><233>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-14.mp3
#14) Monte, Lou: "Pepino The Italian Mouse" (1962/63) [5] {-} <37><363>

According to internet sources the Italian text lyrics
and translation would be:

Ce sta una suracilla basci' u' "cellar" mezzo mure.
Ogni sera ella esce quando la casa e scura.
Ella do indo la cucina balla sula-sula
Appara 'nu malandrina, pura la gata s'a paura.

English translation:
There's a mouse down in the cellar between the walls.
Every evening it comes out when the house is dark.
She comes up in the kitchen and dances all alone
She seems like such a rascal, even the cat is terrified.

Near the beginning of the song Lou calls Pepino a
"mulignana" (eggplant), long considered a perjorative term for
African-Americans.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-15.mp3
#15) Nobles, Cliff, & Co.: "Horse Fever" (1968) {68] {-}

AKA (only to me) as "Son Of The Horse".
As an aside I discovered
that "The Horse" has an interesting history. The A side was
intended to be a vocal called "Love Is All Right". When the
producers decided that they needed a B side at minimal cost
they simply used the instrumental track and called it "The Horse"
Internet legend has it that a DJ accidently played the wrong
side and the rest is history. Well almost; a different vocal
version of "The Horse" was released a few months later. I
understand it is pretty rare. I included all of them on
the GOLQ 440 playlist.

Don't want a silver dollar
Rabbit's foot on a string
The happiness in your warm caress
No rabbit's foot can bring
#16) Presley, Elvis, with The Jordanaires: "Good Luck Charm" (1962)
[1] {-} <85><231>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-17.mp3
#17) Robic, Ivo: "The Happy Muleteer" (1960) [58] {-} <363>

It's easy, baby so follow me
It's a natural dance to do
And once you do it
You're gonna see
That you really love it too
#18) Rydell, Bobby: "The Fish" (1961) [25] {-} <343>

I have to say I never did "The Fish", "The Duck" or "The Mouse".
Probably a result of my two left feet problem.
The tune for this song is entirely reminiscent of "Mama Said"
by the Shirelles. So much so that there was an artist credit
change on the 45 from the "Cameo" records guys to the authors
of the Shirelles song. I don't know if there was an actual
law suit or not.

Be the first one on your block
Every cat will be in shock
#19) Sales, Soupy: "The Mouse" (1965) [76] {-} <159><274>

As a "Lucky Strike extra" I included "Soupy's Theme" by
The Miniature Men on the GOLQ 440 playlist. If the phrase
"Lucky Strike extra" has no meaning for you, I am jealous
of your youth. Just know that before Jersy Shore there
was another "Snooky/Snooki".
The Miniature Men also released a version of
#25 "Baby Elephant Walk".

I gave you love as sweet as honey
My life, my soul and all my money
You didn't seem to realize?
You had a home in paradise
#20) Searchers, The: "Bumble Bee" (1965) [21] {-} <102><269>

My personal preferemce tends toward the earlier
LaVern Baker version (1960). It is included on the GOLQ 440
playlist.

Well, I'm a monkey's uncle who's a cousin to a chimpanzee
Like I was reeling and a rocking and a swinging from a coconut tree
Oh, honey, can't you see you bring out the monkey business in me?
#21) Sedaka, Neil: "I Go Ape" (1959) [42] {-} <64><319>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-22.mp3
#22) Tijuana Brass, The Featuring Herb Alpert : "The Lonely Bull
(El Toro Solo)" (1962) [6] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-23.mp3
#23) Tune Rockers, The: "The Green Mosquito" (1958) [44] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-24.mp3
#24) Ventures, The: "The 2000 Pound Bee (Part 2)" (1962) [91] {-}

I put non-hit "Part 1" on the playlist. I confess that
it is not obvious to me why "Part 2" was the bigger hit.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-25.mp3
#25) Welk, Lawrence and His Orchestra: "Baby Elephant Walk" (1962) [48] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ440/GOLQ440-T1.mp3
#T1) Baby Huey And The Baby Sitters: "Monkey Man" (1965) [-] {-}

OK, as a NE Ohio guy I guess I am supposed to hate Pittsburgh (it's the
Browns/Steelers thing I guess). I don't! For many years I travelled
to P'burgh to go to Fred Bohn's Attic Records store to
spend time (and $$) looking for music. I was always impressed
by how many people seemed to be focused on 50's and 60's music
there. There are tunes that were monsters locally there that
went absolutely nowhere anywhere else, including this one.
Went to many oldies shows there because they were not staged
frequently in my area.

Billy Goat, orangutan, eagle up a tree
look at all the animals looking to be free
look at all the animals looking back at me
I think that I should eat them 'cause I am getting hungry
#T2) Pitney, Gene: "Animal Crackers (In Cellophane Boxes)" (1967) [108] {-}

Sorry Gene, but you should have stayed with ballads. This is definitely
not an easy-to-listen-to recording (IMO). It was Gene's only forray into
Billboard territory in 1967. I have seen it reported that Gene recorded
it against his better judgement.
