RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #442 (GOLQ442)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club and Village Idiots, who tied for first
with perfect scores. Just behind were Barry Silk, who missed only a tiebreaker,
and Tri State Trivia, who missed only one regular song.

The Solution to Bob's Puzzler can be found at the end. A star in the "Puz"
column below honors those who solved it:
    Delphi Trivia Club
Randy Price (no quiz entry this time, but did the puzzler)

As always, thanks to everyone who entered.

The December 2023 quiz (GOLQ #443) by Rich Ardini will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #442 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Song was originally recorded by Sonny Dae and His Knights in the winter
of 1953/54. The song was written for Haley (some sources say he was
performing it live as early as 1953), but due to contractual issues, Haley
didn't record it until April 1954. The song languished for about another
year, until its use in the hit movie "Blackboard Jungle" caused it to
burst into prominence in early '55.

#15) Paul & Paula: "Young Lovers" (1963) [6] {14} <64>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW7Zza0V7dM

The follow-up to "Hey Paula," with the couple now about to marry.
Song was written by the duo (Ray Hildebrand & Jill Jackson), who were
    (platonic) college friends.

Ray died 8/18/23 at 82. He wrote "Hey Paula" at the request of a friend
whose girlfriend had that name, but Ray said that the lyrics were inspired
by his hopes to rekindle his own romance with his former girlfriend Judy.
After he quit mid-way through a Dick Clark Caravan tour in 1963 (Dick filled
in as "Paul" for the rest of the tour), Ray & Judy reconciled and were
married from 1964 until her passing in 1999.

create the bizarre hit "Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen.

#T1) It's A Beautiful Day: "White Bird" (1969) [118] {-} <140>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFBqyAN8Bw

David LaFlamme, violinist and co-founder of It's A Beautiful Day, died
8/6/23 at 82. He sings a duet with Pattie Santos on "White Bird".

I'm gonna make that dream come real

#T2) Tammys, The: "Egyptian Shumba" (1964) [-] {n/c} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SmQL8jUsU0

The song became a local hit in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, but failed to
break out nationally. In later years, its reputation as a classic of the
    "girl group" genre has grown.

The group became acquainted with Lou Christie before his rise to fame. Once
he hit it big, he got them signed by United Artists. Despite having this &
other tunes written for them by Lou & his regular writing partner,
Twyla Herbert, there were no hits forthcoming for the group.

The Tammys comprised sisters Cathy & Gretchen Owens, plus their friend
Linda Jones. Mike W. alerted me that Cathy passed away recently
(10/11/22, at 75); an interesting obit item was that one of her daughters
    was named "Tammy"!

When these numbers are translated to letters as directed, the letters form
a paraphrasing of Barry McGuire's statement on why "the music business is
like the Lotto":

"Just put your numbers down. Sometimes they hit. Sometimes not."

Former New Christy Minstrels lead singer McGuire himself provides a fine
example of this statement. Despite numerous singles and albums, only four
of his solo singles made the Billboard charts: "Upon A Painted Ocean" only
reached #117, "Child Of Our Times" #72, and "Cloudy Summer Afternoon
(Raindrops)" #62. "Eve Of Destruction" hit #1.

BONUS CHALLENGE

The requirement that you use any given song only once was added to prevent
the craftiest of you from using songs like The Beach Boys' "When I Grow Up
(To Be A Man)" to "kill a flock of birds with one stone".

There are many solutions to this challenge, but here is one example:

14: "Fourteen or forty, they're kids in their hearts" in Jack Jones'
    "Lollipops And Roses"
15: "She said she'd always been a dancer / She worked at fifteen clubs a
day" in Joe Cocker's "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"
16: Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen"
17: 4 Seasons' "Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)"
18: Bobby Darin's "18 Yellow Roses"
19: 1910 Fruitgum Co. (who had the hit "Simon Says")
20: Pat Boone's "Twixt Twelve And Twenty"
21: "With all that perfumed hair / And it came undone / When I was
twenty-one" in Frank Sinatra's "It Was A Very Good Year"
22: "When I had grown to twenty-two / I fell in love with Mary Lou" in
    Jimmie Rodgers' "Ring-A-Ling-A-Lario"
23: Patti Page's "Two Thousand, Two Hundred, Twenty-Three Miles"
24: Gene Pitney's "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa"
25: "Well, I'm twenty-five years older now / So I know it can't be right"
    in Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues"
26: The Four Preps' "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)"

And for those wishing to go a bit further ...

27: "Spent the groceries and half the rent / I lack fourteen dollars,
havin' twenty-seven cents" in Roger Miller's "Dang Me"
28: "Won't last forever (twenty-eight twenty-nine) / It's kind of sad"
in The Beach Boys' "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)"
29: "Track twenty-nine / We gotta get there on time" in Harpers Bizarre's
    "Chattanooga Choo Choo"
30: Willie Mitchell's "30-60-90"
31: The Shirelles' "31 Flavors"
32: "Ah well I looked at my watch / And it was nine thirty-two" in The
Dave Clark Five's "Reelin' And Rockin'"

I hope you enjoyed this medley of musical numbers!
