RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #444 (GOLQ444)

Excellent scores were obtained by... EVERYONE! Four teams reached the
apogee of their orbit with perfect scores: The Coasters, The EJ'S & Co.,
Randy Price and Village Idiots. Additionally three teams identified all
the regular songs and got tripped up with a tiebreaker. All in all, amazing
recognition of these songs, some of which I thought were pretty tough.

Everyone mentioned the theme of space/planets etc.

Now, on a more somber note; I screwed up. Tiebreaker #1 was not eligible as
it was previously used in GOLQ 429. The re-use rule states that a song
cannot be used for two years after it appears in a GOLQ. I don't know how
it happened; I choose to blame space aliens.

I have now been notified that I must appear before the GOLQ Inquisitors
[nobody EVER expects the GOLQ Inquisition] and account for my misfeasence.
I have been told that the Inquisitors are a surly lot; the last person
to be before them was forced to listen to "Tutti Frutti" sung
by Pat Boone until they cried out for mercy.

At any rate, my remedy is to give everyone credit for T1 for team
scoring (Nearly everyone got it anyway) but I adjusted the song recognition
table based on actural correct answers.

All of the songs in this quiz plus some extras can be found at:

The usual Youtube caveats apply.

Thanks to everyone who entered.

     GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #440 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

    #number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
    "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
    "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
        (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
        so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
    "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

=========================================================================

It's more than I can bear
When they start to stare
'Cause they think
You're too good to be true
#01) Armstrong, Louis, and The All Stars: "I Still Get Jealous"
       (1964) [45] {n/c} <190>

A lovely girl with sunlight in her hair
And take the brightest stars up in the skies
And place them in her eyes for me
#02) Avalon, Frankie: "Venus" (1959) [1] {10} <9><90><173><316><384>

In 1976 Frankie released a "Disco" version of this song. I
included it in the Youtube playlist. I apologize in advance.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-03.mp3
#03) Blue Stars, The: "Lullaby Of Birdland" {1955/56) [16] {-}

According to Mr. Whitburn, the lead singer on this song was
the never-to-be-forgotten Blossom Dearie.
I included a non-charting English version by Ella Fitzgerald on
the playlist, but I don't think it is a direct translation.

Must be those strangers that come every night
Whose saucers shaped lights put people up tight
Leave blue green footprints that glow in the dark
I hope they get home all right
#04) Byrds, The: "Mr. Spaceman" (1966) [36] {-} <93>

Lyin' at my front door
Daddy's done turned salty
And baby, you made him so sore
#05) Charles, Ray: "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'" (1960) [95] {17} <335>

No relationship to the Gerry and The Pacemakers song of almost the same name.
("cryin'" vs "crying" although there is some variation)

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-06.mp3
#06) Clanton, Jimmy: "Venus In Blue Jeans" (1962) [7] {-} <1><141><317><372>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-07.mp3
#07) Donnie and The Dreamers: "Count Every Star" (1961) [35] {-]

Charting versions also by:
The Rivieras (1958) same group as #16 (included on playlist)
Linda Scott (1962)

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-08.mp3
#08) Harnell, Joe, and His Orchestra: "Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova"
       (1962/63) [14] {-} <224>

Thou should always have faith in me
In everything I say & do
Love me, love me, love me with all your heart & soul
Until our life on earth is through
Oh how happy we will be
#09) Harvey and The Moonglows: "Ten Commandments Of Love"
       (1958) [22] {9} <44><133><334>

One team answered with the James MacArthur version, but although
it fits alphabetically these lyrics are not included in it. In fact
it is about a full minute shorter than the other charted versions. I
included both of them on the playlist so you could "compare and contrast".
Purely for shock value, I also included "The Ten Commandments Of Man"
by Prince Buster.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-10.mp3
#10) Mancini, Henry And His Orchestra: "Moon River" (1961) [11] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-11.mp3
#11) Mooney, Art, and His Orchestra: "The River Kwai March and Colonel Bogey"
       (1958) [88] {-}

I had to do a bit of hand wringing about the scoring on this one. Some
entrants identified the artist as "Mitch Miller" which fits alphabetically.
The fact that it does not fit the theme is immaterial, but there is
a suble difference (hup 2-3-4) in this version as opposed to
Mooney's version. After wringing my hands until calloused, I decided
not to credit the Miller version. Both versions are on the playlist.

[Editor's note: No hand wringing necessary. A clip of the song was the clue.
Only one artist recorded that clip. Our team originally identified the song
as by Mitch Miller. But it had a slghtly different title, which did not fit
the theme. As a result, we kept digging and found the right song. We expected
that we would not have received credit for having the wrong artist.]

To the raft we can race
And for just a little while
I'll sit and pretend
That you're on a desert isle
#12) Noble, Nick: "Moon-Light Swim" (1957) [37] {-}

Tony Perkins had a higher ranking (#24) version that same year.

I wouldn't try to own your soul
You can be free
I only want you here each night
Loving me
#13) Peppermint Rainbow, The: "Will You Be Staying After Sunday"
       (1969) [32] {-} <24><216><291>

When the memories that linger in our hearts
Memories that make my heart grow cold
Well, when someday they're gonna live again, sweetheart
#14) Presley, Elvis: "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again"
       (1956/57) [19] {-} <273><338>

The stars are a-glow
And tonight
How their light
Sets me dreaming
My love, do you know
That the light in your eyes
Brightly beaming
I bring you and sing you
#15) Rivieras, The: "Moonlight Serenade" (1959) [47] {-}

They'll twist and I'll twist
They'll shimmy and I'll shimmy
They'll fly and I'll fly
Well, they're out there a-havin' fun
#16) Rivieras, The: "California Sun" (1964) [5] {n/c} <13><89><332>

Much tamer version by Joe Jones in 1961 (#89). Added it to
the playlist.

I tried to pitch a curve by using two different groups
with the same name. I only succeeded in blowing out
my rotator cuff; almost no one was fooled.

I did have an entry report the artist as
"Royal Showband Waterford" with a raw and raucous
group from Ireland. "It's got a good beat and it's easy
to dance to", I give it an 86 and included it in the
playlist.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-17.mp3
#17) Shocking Blue, The: "Venus" (1969/70) [1] {-} <131><217><322><352><417>

As pointed out by a couple of entrants, this may be the only example
of two completely different songs with the same name having
reached #1 position.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-18.mp3
#18) Spacemen, The: "The Clouds" (1959) [41] {1}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-19.mp3
#19) Stoloff, Morris Conducting the Columbia Pictures Orchestra:
       "Moonglow And Theme From 'Picnic'" (1956) (1) {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-20.mp3
#20) Strawberry Alarm Clock: "Good Morning Starshine" (1969) [87] {-} <207>

Same year version by "Oliver" was #3.

She said, Please, Mister Earthman
Just one little kiss?
I said, Okay, okay, okay!
But then you go away
But when I finished kissing her
I had this to say
#21) Turner, Jesse Lee: "The Little Space Girl" (1959) [20] {-} <61><155><387>

A kind of fun follow up by Jesse was "Little Space Girl's Father". It's on
the playlist.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-22.mp3
#22) Vaughn, Billy And His Orchestra: "Sail Along Silvery Moon" (1957/58 [5) {-}

How about the astronaut on the ceiling
Whats your name
Quick Joey Small
And where you from Joey
A jelly jungle of orange marmalade
#23) Venus, Vik, (Alias: Your Main Moon Man): "Moonflight"
       (1969) [38] {-} <69><261>

You can love me if you wanna
But I do declare
When I get restless
I've gotta move somewhere
#24) Walker, Jr., & The All Stars: "(I'm A) Road Runner"
       (1966) [20] {4} <65><162>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-25.mp3
#25) Wright, Ruby: "Three Stars" (1959) [99] {-}

Narration by DJ Dick Pike. Less popular version of
Tommy Dee hit (#3) in the same year

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-T1.mp3
#T1) Dixie Cups: "Gee The Moon Is Shining Bright" (1965) [102] {-} <419>

No need to expound on this one; see my tale of woe in the introduction.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ444/GOLQ444-T2.mp3
#T2) Ocapellos, The: "The Stars" (1966) [-] {-}

One of those great group harmony tunes that fall into my
"doowoppy" state of mind. According to my sources, this was
popular in Pittsburgh via Porky Chedwick. The Ocapellos were
from New Jersey and apparently received some airplay on the
East Coast as well. The make-up of the group is uncertain
(at least to me). Some folks claim the author of the
song(Bobby Kline) was a member, some say no. I find myself with
the latter.
