From: rns@npg-sd.SanDiegoCA.NCR.COM (Rick Schubert) Newsgroups: alt.rock-n-roll.oldies,rec.games.trivia Subject: Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #48 (GOLQ48) Message-ID: <6558@npg-sd.SanDiegoCA.NCR.COM> Date: 1 Sep 93 19:48:52 GMT Organization: NCR Corp., Application Development Environment - San Diego With this quiz, the Golden Oldies Lyics Quiz series turns 3 years old. I posted GOLQ01 on or around 9/5/90 (our carbon-dating technology occasionally is off by a day or so). While that converts to one 33-1/3 of a century, we'll still stick to 45s. As was done for GOLQ47, this quiz is being crossposted to alt.rock-n-roll.oldies and rec.games.trivia. Readers of the latter who have not yet discovered the former may want to check out that new newsgroup (if your site doesn't carry alt.rock-n-roll.oldies but does carry many alt groups, contact me and I will give a few pointers that may help). After the 25 regular songs, there will be 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 and 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts; although there may have been charted covers of these songs, I believe these early versions to be much more well known. Note that the "banner years" (those listed just before the lyrics to song #01) do not apply to the tie-breakers. The banner years are specific to the particular quiz and specify the actual range of years for the regular 25 songs for that quiz. For the purpose of the banner years, a song that first charted in 1954 but also charted in 1955 is considered a 1955 song; a song that first charted in 1969 but also charted in 1970 is considered a 1969 song (because all regular songs are restricted to 1955-1969 as per General Rule #5). There have been no changes to the general rules. Answers must be received by 5:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, September 21, 1993. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. They are based on earlier quiz rules by David Griboff and Valentino Herrera.) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist - as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number or with a punctuation symbol will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number or symbol. If a song has been done by more than one artist who fit the criteria of this quiz, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). _____________________________________________________________________________ -- Rick Schubert (rick.schubert@SanDiegoCA.NCR.COM)
