My quizzes always contain a theme/thread/motif. Sometimes it involves the entire quiz (e.g., all songs were top-5 hits, no song made the top 10, etc.) or it may involve several songs (e.g., songs performed by duos, songs with 2-word repeating titles, songs by the original artist whose cover charted higher, 1st charted songs, songs with a certain word/phrase in the title/lyrics/artist, songs by recently deceased artists, songs by artists recently inducted into the Hall Of Fame, songs with "soul" in the title which peaked at #2 in 1967, etc.) or it may be a combination of the two. All examples listed have actually been used!! In any case, sometimes people have figured out the theme(s) & sometimes not. Sometimes figuring out a theme MAY help to identify other songs/to make a semi-educated guess & sometimes not. It's just supposed to be fun (or it's supposed to be ignored--it's your choice). Finally, I usually include a broader variety of music in my quizzes (i.e., not just R'n'R); this particular quiz is really a mixed bag (which I expect to be DIFFICULT)!! If you think you've identified a theme or themes, let me know in your entry. As is always the case on my quizzes, all lyrics were obtained recently from the radio. Oh, one more thing for the newbies (alt.rock-n-roll.oldies), lyrics within parentheses represent background vocals; these are added optionally, but they will never be present when they include the song title :-( After the 25 regular songs, there will be 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 & 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts for the specific artist. There have been no changes to the general rules (which appear after the lyrics). Good luck to all those who dare to enter. Rick Schubert will be posting the GOLQ48 Results/Answers on Thursday, 9/23. Jamie Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EDT on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1993. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " ").
