Please make sure to send your entries to him (bsilk@charm.isi.edu). _______________________________________________________________________________ Welcome oldies fans! After the 25 regular songs, there will be 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 & 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts for the specific artist. I expect this quiz to be more difficult than most of my previous quizzes. However, if you can identify my theme(s), this might help you figure out the tough ones! Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EST on Tuesday, March 1, 1994. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT post) answers to: bsilk@charm.isi.edu I WILL ACKNOWLEDGE VIA EMAIL RECEIPT OF ALL ENTRIES. If you don't receive an acknowledgement within two or three days, I can be reached at (703)351-2701. _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #55 (Songs were from 1957 through 1969) Due 5:00 PM EST, Tuesday, Mar. 1, 1994. _____________________________________________________________________________ Hey boy They say that you're contrary 'Cause you think your love is extraordinary #01) Will I look for the same things in a woman that I dig in a girl Will I settle down fast or will I first wanna travel the world #02) Well, you know that I love you tell the world I do Come on pretty baby why can't you be true I need your lovin' baby oh so bad The best little woman I've ever had #03) We're gonna sing But we dance just as good as we sing In Houston, we just started a new dance #04) I said: "What's the matter" He said: "A train just ran over me" I said: "Mm, how often does this happen" He said: "Everyday about this time" I said: "Well, why do you just sit out here then" He said: "Because I cannot believe that it's happenin'" #05) Early in the evening Just about supper time Over by the courthouse They're starting to unwind #06) If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme #07) At night the stars put on a show for free And darling you can share it all with me #08) How can you sit yourself down for a rest When you know that I'm trying my best To dance with you, girl To dance with you, girl #09) Baby it ain't hard to do You've been doin' it ever since you were two That's it baby Now you've got to swing Come on baby, shake that thing #10) Sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of having you near In spite of the warning voice That comes in the night That repeats and repeats in my ear #11) I never knew What love could do 'Til I met you Now everything is oh so cozy Now my skies are blue all because of you I'm so glad I was lonely #12) When you're movin' right up close to me That's when I get the chills all over me Quivers down my back bone #13) Bring my baby to me Boy and girl they fell in love Each it was like heaven above He looked into her eyes of blue She vowed to him that she'd be true #14) You said that I'm the only one Oh how I want it to be But when I kiss your pretty lips You got nothing left for me #15) The light of hope burns dim But in my heart I pray My love and faith in him Will bring him back someday-ay-ay #16) Something old Something new Something borrowed Something blue Whoa, I am yours to cherish and behold With this little band of gold #17) They tell me that the river's too deep And it's much too wide For you can't get across to the other side #18) Golden days before they end Whisper secrets to the wind Your baby won't be near you anymore #19) She touched my hand Oh what a chill I got Her lips are like a volcano that's hot I'm proud to say that she's my buttercup #20) Within the prison walls of my mind There's still a part of you left behind And though it hurts I'll get by Without your lovin' #21) Now things was looking rosy, baby Everything was fine You never made your sign That you had changed your mind #22) Come on baby Come on baby Don't say maybe Well, it makes no difference who is wrong Just as long as I'll be with you #23) Whoa, please let me kiss you tonight Darling, let me kiss you tonight Am I asking too much Oh darling, yes, your touch drives me insane #24) Cars and girls are easy to come by in this day and age Laughing, joking, drinking, smoking 'til I've spent my wage #25) Tie breakers: Your eyes don't shine Like and they used to shine And the thrill is gone When your lips meet mine #T1) She's the sweetest pet in the world It's down to me The way she talks when she's spoken to Down to me The changes come #T2) _____________________________________________________________________________ Please answer the following questions (append your answer to the line): Name(s) = E-mail address = Age(s) [will be published if answered] = Number of people (including you) who contributed to your answers = _____________________________________________________________________________ General Rules for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quizzes: (These rules have been crafted over time by the GOLQ Authors: Rick Schubert, Barry Silk, Howard Teitelbaum, Ron Crandall, Carole Hanrahan, Jamie Lubin, and Dan Murphy. They are based on earlier quiz rules by David Griboff and Valentino Herrera.) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist - as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1986" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). -- Barry Silk (bsilk@charm.isi.edu)
