These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 & 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts for the specific artist. There have been no changes to the general rules (which appear after the lyrics). Don't forget to let me know if you think you've figured out my (mini) theme(s) which hopefully may aid you on this DIFFICULT quiz. I decided to run a hard quiz as my last one (GOLQ56) was on the easy side (20 entrants IDd > 1/2 of the songs) & also because I figured there would be less entrants during the summer. Good luck to all those who dare to enter. Jamie Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EDT on Tuesday, July 12, 1994. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT POST) answers to: jil@donuts0.bellcore.com I will acknowledge receipt of entries via e-mail. If you don't receive an acknowledgment, I can be reached at (908)699-7929 or FAXed at (908)336-2979 _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #61 (Non-tiebreaking songs were from 1957 through 1969) Due 5:00 PM EDT, Tuesday, July 12, 1994. _____________________________________________________________________________ There's one day I dream of (dream of, ahhh) The day I can bring (can bri-ing, ahhh) My token of tru-u-ue love (ooh-ahhh) Your engagement ring I love you #01) Once there were valleys where rivers used to run Once there were blue skies with white clouds high above Once they were part of that everlasting love #02) Each night, in dreams, I see your face Memories time cannot erase Then I awake and find you've gone Then I'm so blue and all alone #03) There's a story in our town of the prettiest girl around Golden hair and eyes of blue How those eyes could flash at you (how those eyes could flash at you) Boys hung around her by the score, but she loved the boy next door Who worked at the candy store #04) In time, just tell me your problems And you'll find out baby, I'll solve 'em If your late one mornin', a-don't hurry If you got big trouble, a-don't worry Just depend On your friend #05) Smoke and fire upon the sea Everywhere they looked was the enemy The heathen Gods of old Japan Yeah, they thought they had the best of a mighty good man #06) I don't want much The good Lord's earth beneath my feet A gentle touch From that one girl and life is sweet and good #07) A land of bluebirds and fountains and nothing to do But cling to an angel that looks like you And when you hold me How warm you are Be mine my darling #08) While away from everywhere We'll share our love forever We won't miss the world at all We'll have our own world together #09) You'll always break the finest heart With a hasty word you can't recall So if I broke your heart last night It's because I love you most of all #10) For six long days and dreary nights they tried to find her trail Churchill told the people, "put every ship asail 'Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be" #11) Kiss me (kiss me) I love the way that you kiss me (kiss me ooo-ooo) There's only one thing wrong with the way that you kiss me (kiss me yeah) Now your kisses are sweeter than sugar and plenty strong enough (strong enough) But the bad part is you don't kiss me long enough #12) My jealous eyes have learned To take a look or two They were too blind to see That I was losing you #13) I know she got on in Baltimore A hundred and ten miles ain't much distance But it sure do make a difference I don't think she loves me anymore #14) From the moment I could feel this crazy beat You gotta lose control of your two left feet Give me mountain juice Turn me loose Leave me wave my arms about #15) Things we did together You said they'd never end Now until forever Oh yeah, that's what you said #16) You can do any step you chose It's a dance that is rhythm and blues So shake your shoulders and shuffle your feet And keep in time to that low-down beat #17) And if you need a little lovin', call on me Lord have mercy And if you want some kissin', call on me baby That's all you got to do now No more lonely nights would you be alone #18) I've given up on schemes 'Cause every one fell through I've given up so many things Don't ask me to give up on you And baby, baby #19) When you're done and there's only one Who will your honey be? When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). -- Jamie Lubin jil@donuts0.bellcore.com -- please use this address for replies, occasionally the Reply-To info in the header is unreliable
