First, song #13 violated the quiz rule that a song from previous quiz can not be repeated. I am supplying a replacement song. Also, I had an error in the lyrics (2nd & 4th line) for song #11. The rest of the quiz is unchanged. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks to those who pointed out the errors. --Ron ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Happy (Rockin') New Year! From the home of the #2 PSU Nittany Lions, here's the 70th installment of the Golden Olden Lyrics Quiz series. I'm hopeful that it's not too difficult, but I'm sure it will prove to be plenty challenging. I haven't included systematic themes, although there might be some similarities among some of the songs. After the 25 regular songs, there will be 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs are not in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but are alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 & 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts for the specific artist. There have been no changes to the general rules (which appear after the lyrics). Good luck to all those who enter! Ron Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EST on Tuesday, January 24, 1995. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT POST) answers to: rmc@psuvm.psu.edu I will acknowledge receipt of entries via e-mail. If you don't receive an acknowledgment, I can be reached at (814)865-0939. _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #70 Song #s 1-25 were from 1957 through 1969 Due 5:00 PM EST, Tuesday, January 24, 1995 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't, don't, don't, don't you see What you are do-o-oin' to me You upset my heart Right from the start #01) I kicked off my shoes And felt the good earth under my feet I loosened my tie And felt what it feels like to breathe #02) I can tell by the dimple On your chin You're in beautiful shape For the shape you're in And I'm in shape #03) So many loves have gone wrong For so many hearts are in pain Just like us, they were too young And they played a losing game #04) Somebody to call me turtle dove #05) I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde #06) A man in Kentucky Sure is lucky #07) I feel just like a volcano that's ready to go I want your love and kisses 'cause I love you so And with every kiss that ya' give to me I'll fill your lovin' heart with ecstasy #08) I want, want you to know I love, I love you so Please hold, hold me so tight All through, all through the night #09) Baby, I was cruel-el-l (I was cruel) Ba-a-by, I'm a fool (I'm such a fool) #10) And when I speak of you I see envy in other men's eyes And I'm well aware Of what's on their minds They pretend to be my friend #11) I know that somewhere Somewhere, along the way I'll find my love My own true love Someday #12) Oh, she's wonderful, she's marvelous She's fabulous, she's beautiful And anyone can understand why #13) Let's forget about the whinin' and cryin' and the shootin' and the dyin' And the fella' with the switch-blade knife #14) Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me I can't believe It's just a burning memory #15) They tell us we're different We haven't the right To decide for ourselves, dear What's black and what's white #16) I can see You're slipping away from me And you're so afraid I'll plead with you to stay #17) Said you'd be (Ooh-wa) Good to me (Ooh-wa-wa) Said our love (Ooh-wa) Would never die (Ooh-wa-wa) Said you'd be (Ooh-wa) Good to me (Ooh-wa-wa) But baby, you didn't even try #18) Oh, I swear I'm gonna get you If it takes me all my life I'll hope and pray and dream and scheme I'm gonna be your wife #19) I get up in the morning Kick the covers from my bed The sunlight in my eyes Playing tricks with my head I work like a dog On my job every day Tryin' to make some money So's we can go and play #20) You've given me a true love And every day I thank you, love For giving back so new So inviting, so exciting #21) Quit spyin' and sighin' and lyin' and tryin' to be so mean 'Cause You ain't scarin' nobody, baby You're just makin' a scene #22) Whoa-oo-o-o, I'm gonna love you With all my heart Just hoping, Dear That we'll never part You're the girl I'm thinking of #23) Wonder why when we're alone The hours always pass so fast A kiss or two and then you're gone Gee, the time just doesn't last #24) Now Man's reign is through But through eternal night The twinkling of starlight So very far away Maybe it's only yesterday #25) tie breakers: Love is like a piece of gold Hard to get, hard to hold I want to hold your hand Until I make you understand #T1) Maybe I'm crazy To suppose I'd ever be the One you chose Out of the thousand invitations You receive #T2) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please answer the following questions (append your answer to the line): Name(s) = E-mail address = Age(s) [will be published if answered] = Number of people (including you) who contributed to your answers = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Rules for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quizzes: (These rules have been based upon those from Rick Schubert, David Griboff, Valentino Herrera, Barry Silk, Howard Teitelbaum, Ron Crandall, Carole Hanrahan, Jamie Lubin, Marc Dashevsky, and Bob Bluestein) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist, as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When we don't have access to the original 45, our source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless we have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless we've made a mistake: - Artists' names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". - Artists' names beginning with a number are alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done with the given lyrics by more than one artist, a correct response is one whose artist fits alphabetically between the artists of the adjoining actual answers. If you don't know which artist fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you are guaranteed full credit only if you include a correct artist. The quiz master may use his/her judgement in awarding no, partial, or full credit to answers naming only performers of versions not containing the exact given lyrics. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname," it is alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by ------------------------------------------------------- The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly .. Crickets Buddy Holly & the Crickets .......... Holly Little Anthony & the Imperials ...... Little Little Richard ...................... Little Little Peggy March .................. March Martha & the Vandellas .............. Martha 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the Billboard Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. Partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; we will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). --Ron Crandall rmc@psuvm.psu.edu
