GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #437 (GOLQ437)

Welcome to GOLQ 437! Unless I am recruited in the future to fill in for one
of the other quizmasters, this will be my swansong effort as a quizmaster, due
to my failing eyesight. I first stumbled upon the GOLQ in 1999, when the quiz
was nearly nine years old. My Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) co-worker
Rick Falkenstein and I informally stepped through quizzes 1-148 on our own
over a period of several months. Once we got caught up, we submitted our
first official entry as the NAAVAIRHEADS, in November, 1999, for GOLQ-149. We
crafted our first quiz as quizmasters for GOLQ-173, in May of 2001. In recent
years, I have enjoyed working as a solo entrant and quizmaster, but I now have
difficulty crafting the quizzes and posting the results. I still plan to
participate as an entrant.

It's been my pleasure and honor to serve as a quizmaster for the past 22
years. Special thanks to GOLQ creator Rick Schubert for the quiz and for his
patience with my many typos and format errors in recent months. During my
QM time I enjoyed having you as on-line friends, and especially enjoyed
getting to meet oldie-guru Mark Dashevsky in Boston in 2010, and stalwart
Howard Teitlebaum, who once drove two hours out of his way to hear me play
music in a bluegrass jam. Both of these guys have been pillars of GOLQ since
the very early days.

So, enjoy this final quiz of mine, which contains a theme involving all 27
songs, including a song with a title that is part of the theme. Also included
as a tribute, unrelated to the theme, is a song written by a late, great
artist who recently passed. In order to make the theme work, I needed to
include several songs that may be stumpers, but figuring out the theme may
help identify those songs.

                       Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #437
                Recordings #01-25 were from 1956 through 1969
Due 5:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) on Friday, June 30, 2023.

When life was slow and oh, so mellow
#01)

You've got me sittin' on a wall
Uh huh, uh huh
You've got me sittin' on a wall
#02)

Nothing you can do
But you can learn how to be you in time
#03)

I told her softly and sincere
And she leaned and whispered in my ear
#04)

When you know she's been untrue
Woah, listen
To what I've got to say, girl
#05)

So I thumbed down a whale
Who was headin' way
And I reached the States in about a half a day
#06)

Through cupped hands, 'round the tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
#07)

Take a hint from me, Mama, please don't you cry no more
Don't you cry no more
Take a hint from me, Mama, please don't you cry no more
Don't you cry no more
#08)

You know I work so hard
All day long
Everything I try to do
Seem to always turn out wrong
That's why I want to stop by
On my way home
#09)

When it comes to the chicken or to doin' the bop
I got a girl
#10)

Blinded by rose colored dreams
They build their castles on wishes
With only rainbows for beams
#11)

People stop and stare, they don't bother me
For there's nowhere else on Earth that I would rather be
#12)

I'll never leave you
I'm forever bound
#13)

Got a penny in my pocket
And I found a four-leaf clover
And I put it in my locket
#14)

There ain't no good in our goodbyin'
True love takes a lot of tryin'
Oh, I'm cryin'
#15)

To think I was once forsaken
With your kiss, I've been awakened
#16)

We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
#17)

Now that funny feeling has me amazed
Don't know what to do, my head's in a haze
#18)

Well, the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes, my friend
She's rolling down at last
#19)

Pressed between the pages of my mind
#20)

I love you so
How I wanted for you
You'll never know
Please
#21)

I've been forgotten, yes, forgotten
Oh how I wonder
How is it I failed
#22)

It wasn't fancy built at all
We had newspapers on the wall
It was air conditioned in the wintertime
It was just a humble hut
But its door was never shut
And a man could get inside without a dime
#23)

Well, look-a there, look-a there, look-a there, look-a there, ooh wee
look-a there, look-a there, look-a there, ooh wee
Ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh wee
Well she's so fine, fine, fine
#24)

In the past it's come and gone
I feel like I can't go on
Without love
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Sometimes love will bloom in the springtime
Then like flowers, in summer it will grow
Then just fade away in the winter
When the cold winds begin to blow
#T1)

If ya don't like my peaches
Don'tcha shake my tree
Get out o' my orchard
Let my peaches be
And now she's gone and I don't worry
#T2)
